Lovely lavender

Oh, lovely lavender! How I love thee!

(I’ve actually already written a post all about .here..

But thought it deserved another shout-out because of its many wonderful qualities )

I found a fabulous article on it and many other essential oils and had to share…

Here’s a snippet about it :—->

There two main varieties of lavender essential oil:

  • Lavender essential oil, the classic lavender, is distilled from the flowers of L. angustifolia. It has a sweet floral aroma and contains a high percentage of esters, mostly linalyl acetate. It does not contain camphor which distinguishes it from other lavender varieties. The oil is often used for its anti-inflammatory, calming, headache relieving, sedative and skin healing properties. One of the rarely known effects and qualities of L. angustifoliaoil is its ability to relieve menstrual pain [29,30].
  • Spike lavender essential oil is obtained from flowers of L. latifoliaMedik. This species of lavender contains high percentage of 1,8-cineol and camphor and therefore has a strong camphoraceous odour. Due to these components, spike lavender oil is recommended for skin damages (cuts, burns, stings), as a pain reliever, for headache treatment and for its antimicrobial properties. It has anti-bacterial, antiviral, antimycotic, anti-inflammatory and nourishing properties and is one of most common used and best investigated oil in aromatherapy. It is used for relaxing and stress relief, for nose and throat infections, for skin care, in wound treatments and for stomach problems. It has a pleasant aroma. Lavender oil is also commonly used in pharmaceutical products and as a fragrance ingredient in soaps, cosmetics and perfumes [31].

Here’s a lovely little bottle of Beautiful Bulgarian lavendula angustifolia variety for a decent price.
And here’s a cute little sample size of three different varieties available thru Amazon including French, Bulgarian, and Spike if you’re not sure which one you want..

Natural Remedy for Poison Ivy

Summertime funtime outside playtime! It’s always great for your body mind and soul to spend time with nature, but if you’re not careful or aware of your surroundings you could find yourself in an awfully itchy pickle.

Yup. Poison ivy has no qualms about setting boundaries!

A super helpful natural remedy resource for Poison Ivy,

From a wonderful medicine woman Rainee Ford. (https://www.facebook.com/raineeford)

Poison Ivy

How to happily attend a gathering alongside these plants.

Energetics: Why it’s here, what does it have to teach?

Boundaries:
The value of awareness – and the cost of ignorance & inattention.

Poison Ivy has a “Passive” defense that isn’t an open attack. Meaning Sister Ivy doesn’t go out of her way to cause trouble. And, if you step on her, bruise her, or encounter her after shes been mowed, she often lets folks know it!

Science: Urushiol is the oil based sap that is found in Poison Ivy.

It is a persistent pervasive sticky oil that clings to EVERYTHING it encounters. (Including bottoms of shoes. Shoe laces, clothing, pet fur, bases of drums, ect. Be Mindfuland think about all the things that may have touched the ground!!)

As a chemical molecule it ends in an =OH (which is basically an alcohol… and since like dissolves like, (in this case, is changes the structure of the molecule) you can “neutralize” the Urushiol with something as simple as Rubbing Alcohol (also called Isopropyl alcohol)

Sometimes for a looooong time – WASH ANYTHING THAT MAY HAVE COME IN CONTACT WITH THE GROUND DOWN AT THE FIRE (Use 70% or higher Isopropyl alcohol / rubbing alcohol on shoes, bags, belts, and other non washing machine things. For cloths and ground blankets, Use HOT water and soap with surfactant (I use Simple Green) in the laundry.)

Urishiol as a chemical molecule ends in an OH. (In layman’s terms that means if you put alcohol on it, it changed its chemical nature. Meaning it will no longer spread.
Though next you need to get it off still!!!!
The quicker you do, the less gets absorbed by your skin.

Heat, sweating and itching may cause the reaction to keep presenting through the skin until the bodily stops reacting. (Which can take anywhere from 1-4 weeks, depending on how sensitive you are).

Most important is to wash ANYTHING that may have come in contact with alcohol and abrasive OR Hot Soapy water. This includes, walking sticks, bottoms of shoes, bags that may have been set down, ect.

Cultivating Awareness: Learn and be aware of how it looks, where it grows in proximity of your places of existing and traveling during the event. How I work with it, is when I arrive in a place that has poison Ivy, I immediately begin to consider the bottoms of shoes, hems of pants/dressed/skirts and any bags I may put down to be “Hot” and treat them accordingly → Never put them on your bed where you sleep, leave them outside your tent or home space, don’t set bags on laps, be mindful of hugging or touching others, ask if they have washed recently, wash after every contact, be mindful of things like touching your face after having your hands on the ground or petting a dog, Always. Leave. Shoes. Outside. WEAR SHOES. If you NEED contact with the ground to do your work, wash immediately afterwards. (some people react within a half hour, others react 6-12 hours later.) YES, its alot of thinking…. Remember, Sister Ivy is teaching us about MAINTAINING Boundaries – which requires mindfulness. Embrace this lesson, DO THE WORK and the struggle will ease. If you don’t, it may persist for some, for months….. Recontact is a big thing. Urushiol does not lose its ability to cause trouble, even after time. It MUST be neutralized.

Poison Ivy Self-Care Natural Remedy

#1: Wash WELL!! Use: Tecnu (specific poison ivy soap), OR Simple Green. OR Rubbing alcohol & salt OR sand AND Dish Soap.
-ROUGH ABRASION is necessary to remove this sap.
-Bag contaminated clothing separately and wash with hot water and plenty of detergent before using again.
-Place any cleaning cloths used to wash yourself, in a separate bag and DO NOT re-use until they have been washed.

#2: Treatment Suggestions: If you have a rash that is developing, with or without blisters,
WASH FIRST, THEN use any of the following in any combination that brings relief:

  • Calamine lotion
  • Itch Wash
  • Jewelweed plant
  • Baking soda poultice
  • Lavender / Peppermint / Tea Tree Essential oil
  • Rhus Tox 30c Homeopathic remedy (First 3 doses every 20 minutes, then 3 times a day until it begins to clear.) if Rhys doesn’t work, move to Apis.

#3: Prevent the Spread!!! These are all ways to spread Urushiol:
-BE CAREFUL HUGGING PEOPLE!! This is a GOOD way to spread this not so fun experience to loved ones.
-Beware that animals/pets can carry Urushiol on their fur after having walked through it. (this can pass to people who pet them) Pets need a good washing post festival.
-Caution with walking through areas containing poison ivy and then walking into your tent with shoes on. (leave your shoes outside your sleeping space and wash your feet before bed if you love being barefooted.
-Scrub under your nails to prevent spreading the oil after itching the skin that has a rash.
-Wear protective clothing. Tops of bare feet are the most susceptible! Wear tall socks in lieu of shoes if you must.
-if you must go barefoot, wash every evening!!! (see above method of washing FOR poison ivy)

Best Natural Treatments for Skin Blemishes and Essential Oils to Use for Acne

Essential Oils for the Different Types of Skin

Here’s another of my orphaned articles from Yahoo Contributor Network / Associated Content, hope you enjoy!

The best natural treatments for skin blemishes and acne aren’t necessarily the most expensive. Everyone wants a clean, clear face; free of pimples, spots, and uneven skin tone. Here are some products and recipes that have worked for me in the past, are all natural, and are dependable:

Tea tree oil

Tea Tree essential oil (also called Melaleuca oil) is an absolute MUST for acne or problem skin. Tea Tree oil has powerful antibacterial (and even antifungal and antiviral!) properties and is effective against MRSA, which is a strain of bacteria that has developed resistance to some man-made antibiotics. So it’s a natural product that can fight the spread of nasty germs. Its properties also make it crucial in fighting acne.

Best Burt’s Bees Products Treatment for Skin Blemishes:

  • Burt’s Bees Herbal Blemish Stick!!! – worked wonders for me! (and I love the ingredients: SD Alcohol 40-B (from Yellow Corn), Calendula Flower Oil, Borage Seed Oil, Yarrow Oil, Parsley Seed Extract, Willowbark Extract, Lemon Oil, Fennel Oil, Water, Tea Tree Oil, Juniper Oil, and Eucalyptus Oil.)
pic from thehippyhomemaker.com

Essential Oils Best for Treatment for Skin Blemishes & Acne:

  • Tea Tree essential oil – may be used directly on the skin without carrier oil, but you may like to add coconut oil for its antibacterial properties, or jojoba oil (healing and nourishing) for added benefits. An absolute must-have in your acne arsenal! Some people have cleared their skin with just this ingredient alone.
  • Bergamot essential oil (BF or begaptene free) – best to use a carrier such as grapeseed or coconut oil as it is very light and the scent is lovely for both men and women.
  • Lavender essential oil – lavendula angustifolia – maybe used undiluted directly on skin, as Lavender is a universal essential oil with a multitude of properties, always great for any skin type.
  • Rosewood essential oil – nice mixed with tea tree for those less sensitive, it also adds a nice moisturizing quality, make sure to mix with coconut, jojoba, grapeseed or similar carrier.
  • Clove essential oil (only for intense overnight spot treatments)- always use diluted in a carrier such as grapeseed, jojoba, coconut, etc.

Other essential oils that are useful for oily/acne/combination skin:

Geranium, Sandalwood, Jasmine, Juniper, and lemon.

Essential oils are some of my favorite ingredients to use as not only are they all natural, but have many amazing properties to heal all types of skin maladies. The best things you could use in treatment for skin blemishes are natural products. Just make sure to do a patch test to be sure you don’t have allergies.

Also note that essential oils are very potent and less is always more when it comes to using them on the skin. Make sure to dilute them with a carrier oil. One of the lightest carriers is grapeseed oil, but coconut is also a great choice, because of its antibacterial properties, and the jojoba is perfect for when you need extra healing.

My old stand-by remedy for getting rid of blemishes overnight when I was out of all my other treatments, was dabbing a bit of toothpaste mixed with tea tree oil on the pimple, and going to sleep. Most often, it was ready to go by morning. I’d steam my face to open the pores and be rid of it. And follow up with my easy to make Blemish remover toner.

The popping yourself idea probably isn’t thebest advice for everyone, but for me it always worked. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend that to anyone, but just had to throw it in there. But the toner is a MUST!!
😀

Recipe for Blemish remover toner:

Use this after cleansing and patting dry lightly.

In a 4 oz bottle add:

  • Witch hazel 3 oz
  • Calendula oil mixed with fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil 12 to 20 drops
  • Tea tree oil 5 drops
  • Bergamot (bf) 2 drops
  • Lemon 2 drops
  • Eucalyptus 3 drops
  • Juniper 2 drops
  • *Optional- Frankincense or Sandalwood (either is fine) 2 drops

Shake well before each use, apply to cotton pad and swab skin lightly.

if you just don’t feel like making your own. I highly recommend

Holy frijoles I’m dyin ova heeah: Hot Flashes Essential Oil Blend for Menopause and Perimenopause

shutterstock_146775623

Oh moy Gwad…, could it get any hotter in heeeeah?

for those suffering with perimenopause, or menopause,  you know exactly what I’m talkin’ about.

Hopefully, those of you suffering with symptoms of aging, hormonal havoc, and symptoms of menopause can find some comfort here…

Some essential oils perfect for when you get those fiesty Hot Flashes-

  • Clary Sage
  • Geranium
  • Peppermint
  • Grapefruit,
  • Lavender,
  • Rose,
  • Frankincense
  • Lemon
  • Chamomile
  • Ylang Ylang
  • neroli
  • cypress
  • Myrtle
  • Blue Yarrow
  • Fennel
  • geranium rose

Pick a few faves and add about 10 total drops to around 4 oz of rose water or peppermint hydrosol. Keep it in the fridge, and pull it out before bedtime, keep it next to the bed. A few sprays will help in the middle of the night.

I use Clary Sage, Rose, Peppermint, Geranium, Frankincense, Lemon, and a couple others for good measure in my blend.  I also created a special blend called Dragonfly; women going through changes .

( also you may want to consider taking some Evening Primrose Oil , I’ve read lots of articles and reviews that say it does wonders, and it seems to get rave reviews.)

If you’re not into creating your own, Here’s a blend from amazon already put together (granted, I’ve not tried this one, but it seems pretty good): Menopause Relief contains: Pure Essential Oil Blend. Contains: Lavender, Cypress, Lemon, Geranium, German Chamomile, Frankincense.

or one by Amrita; Menopause Roll On Relief, Natural Hot Flashes Relief, Organic Lotion Base with Essential Oils of Sweet Fennel, Clary Sage, Rose Geranium, Jasmine and Vitex.

If you want to make your own you can buy essential oils and add them to a lovely floral water or hydrosol for a nice spray…

Balance blend for men and women:

This blend of essential oils has been noted to balance hormones and regulate prostate function in men as well as helping women through their changes.

It has also been used to successfully reduce or eliminate hot flashes for women:

  • 10 drops Clary Sage
  • 5 drops Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare),
  • 10 drops Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia),
  • 5 drops Myrtle (Myrtus communis),
  • 5 drops Frankincense (boswellia carterii or Sacred Frankincense
  • if you dont have frankincense try Blue Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) or better yet Vitex.
  • 5 drops Peppermint (Mentha piperita),
  • 10 Rose Geranium

FYI:::: ———-> Sacred Frankincense is also being studied for helping to cure cancer!!

Mix these essential oils into 2 oz. of a carrier oil like jojoba or fractionated coconut oil, store in a dark colored glass bottle with a tight lid with name of blend and date.

Then add 0.5oz (15ml) of Balance blend into 4oz (120ml) either rose, peppermint, lavender, myrtle, or blue yarrow hydrosol. Actually, to get this to fit into a 4 oz spray bottle, you’ll want to either get a little larger bottle or use a bit less of the oil blend, or– use up a little bit of the hydrosol on something else (like a facial toner mixed 1/2 + 1/2 with witch hazel) so it all fits into the bottle.

Shake bottle well, close your eyes and give yourself a nice spray on your face, neck, underarms, legs…wherever needed. Safe for entire body…but keep out of eyes, mouth and off genitals..lol.

Several essential oils that contain hormone-like substances related to estrogen are helpful during menopause.

These wonderful oils may be used in many ways, like: in a diffuser, in a massage oil, in the bath, or in salts, or just inhaled . These include:

  • clary sage,
  • geranium
  • clary sage YE womens health
  • Neroli
  • lavender
  • anise,
  • fennel,
  • cypress,
  • angelica,
  • coriander,
  • sage,
  • peppermint
  • lemon
  • rose
  • chamomile
  • jasmine
  • myrtle
  • Vitex
  • Pine
  • Ylang Ylang
  • Jasmine

💗

Such essential oils, will help relieve hot flashes, and many other issues related to menopause. Since essential oils go right through the skin, applying them to fatty areas of the body where hormones are manufactured and stored will create the most direct effect.

Get fabulous hair DIY Shampoo and Conditioner

Our Favorite DIY Shampoos To Try At Home

There’s something so satisfying about working shampoo into a thick lather in the shower. Covering your whole head in big, foamy bubbles just feels so—clean. But, as good as it feels, that shampoo probably isn’t doing you any favors.

While you might not realize it, your traditional shampoo is actually coating your scalp in artificial fragrances, parabens, and other potentially harmful chemicals every time you lather up. Suddenly, it doesn’t seem so clean anymore.

There is good news, though: You can replicate that fresh feeling without all of the funky additives by making your own shampoo. Doing so allows you to control exactly what goes into every batch, since most recipes only call for a few common ingredients anyway. Here’s everything you need to know about trying DIY shampoo at home—plus easy recipes to get started, including conditioners and hair masks, too.

WHY DIY SHAMPOO?

Whether you buy the cheapest bottle you can find at the drugstore or a fancy brand from a high-end salon, odds are, you probably couldn’t list (or even pronounce) any of the ingredients. If it smells nice, foams up, and leaves hair feeling clean, that’s good enough—right?

Not so much. The unfortunate reality is that most conventional products contain all kinds of potentially harmful ingredients. Take sodium lauryl sulfate, or SLS, for example. Research has linked it to skin irritation, organ system toxicity, and even environmental pollution. According to the Environmental Working Group, more than 300 shampoos contain this foaming agent.

And SLS is only one of several potentially harmful ingredients in conventional rinses. Many formulas also include propylparaben, a preservative that could cause allergic reactions or even disrupt the endocrine system.

The vast majority of store-bought brands also contain “fragrance,” a vague ingredient listed on more than 1,000 shampoo bottles. Because manufacturers aren’t required to disclose what scents and chemicals make up each fragrance, it’s nearly impossible to figure out what’s really lurking inside—and anyone with allergies or sensitive skin knows how dangerous this could be.

On the other hand, making your own shampoo gives you complete control over what formula you use. Instead of artificial additives and impossible-to-pronounce chemicals, these DIY hacks rely solely on natural emollients, essential oils, and household staples in order to clean your hair. Plus, homemade shampoo usually costs a small fraction of the price.

DIY SHAMPOO RECIPES

You don’t need a degree in chemistry to make your own shampoo. In fact, most of these ideas call for ingredients you probably already have at home—and none require more than a few minutes of work to get the final result.

Herbal Shampoo

This four-ingredient recipe works for all hair types—from fine and straight to thick and curly. Coconut milk and jojoba oil moisturize, while liquid soap removes excess dirt and oil. Even better, this shampoo gets its fresh scent from essential oils instead of artificial additives.

Ingredients

¼ cup organic coconut milk
¼ cup peppermint liquid soap
20 drops rosemary essential oil
½ teaspoon jojoba oil

Instructions

Combine everything in a squeeze bottle or jar and shake well to mix. Apply to hair and lather up from roots to ends for 30 seconds, then rinse. The shampoo will stay good for up to one month.

Hemp Shampoo

Though hemp isn’t a common ingredient in beauty DIYs, it’s an essential component of this shampoo. Hemp oil naturally hydrates and containsceramides, a type of fat that keeps hair strong, shiny, and healthy. Plus, it’s non-comedogenic—meaning those with sensitive skin don’t have to worry about breaking out on the neck or shoulders.

Ingredients

2 cups liquid castile soap
2 teaspoons hemp seed oil

Instructions

Combine ingredients in a jar with a lid, then seal and shake well. Let sit for 24 hours before using. Shake before each use, and use as you would any shampoo—lather, rinse, and follow with conditioner. Each batch lasts indefinitely.

Dry Shampoo

Woke up late? Roommate hogging the shower? Don’t want to spend an hour blow-drying your hair? Grab this simple dry shampoo that makes it easy to go a few days without washing. It absorbs all that extra grease and oil, leaving you with a shower-fresh look even if it has been days since your last wash.

Blondes can stick to plain cornstarch or arrowroot flour, but brunettes should also add in cinnamon or cacao powder until the mixture matches their hair color for seamless coverage. If you like, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil for a subtle scent.

Ingredients

1/4 cup cornstarch or arrowroot flour
1 to 2 tablespoons unsweetened cacao powder orground cinnamon (optional)
2-3 drops essential oil of your choice (optional)

Instructions

Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl. Store in a recycled salt shaker or mason jar (just poke a few holes in the lid for easy application). Sprinkle on your scalp, then brush through hair to absorb oil in between washes. This mix will last indefinitely.

Baking Soda “No ‘Poo”

The “no ‘poo” method calls for washing hair with nothing but plain baking soda. Advocates say cleansing the scalp with baking soda (a base) and conditioning with apple cider vinegar (an acid) balances the hair’s pH. To try it for yourself, follow the baking soda up with the apple cider vinegar hair rinse detailed below.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons baking soda

Instructions

Wet hair, then scrub scalp with baking soda, avoiding the drier parts of the hair shaft and the ends. Rinse well with water, then follow up with an apple cider vinegar rinse (see below). Let hair air dry.

DIY CONDITIONER RECIPES

Like peanut butter and jelly or ketchup and mustard, you just can’t have shampoo without conditioner. For strong locks, you’ll want to follow up any DIY shampoo cleanse with a good moisturizing treatment, like any one of these three conditioners.

Shea Butter Conditioner

Packed to the brim with hydrating ingredients like shea butter and coconut oil, this conditioner will leave your tresses shiny and healthy. Antioxidant vitamin E oil repairs damaged follicles, while vegetable glycerin acts as a humectant, pulling in moisture from the environment and sealing it into each strand.

Ingredients

1 cup shea butter
2 tablespoons coconut oil
1 teaspoon vegetable glycerin
½ teaspoon vitamin E oil
5 drops lavender essential oil
5 drops rosemary essential oil

Instructions

Heat shea butter in a double boiler until it just begins to melt, then quickly remove from heat. Mix in the rest of the ingredients. Let cool for a few minutes, then whisk until you get a creamy texture. Store in a squeeze bottle or glass jar with a lid. After shampooing, work the conditioner from roots to ends, leave it in for a minute or two, and then rinse thoroughly. Use within one month.

Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

Follow up a simple baking soda shampoo with this minimalist treatment. Apple cider vinegar brings the hair’s pH back into balance as well as stripping product buildup and providing a natural exfoliant (goodbye, dandruff!). Just don’t forget the lavender essential oil—it covers up the strong vinegar smell.

Ingredients

1/2 cup distilled water
1/8 cup apple cider vinegar
3 to 5 drops lavender essential oil

Instructions

Mix ingredients in a glass spray bottle. Use less ACV for dry hair, and more for oily hair. Add lavender until the desired scent is achieved. In between or following shampooing, shake the bottle, spray this ACV rinse all over wet hair, and work through from roots to ends. Rinse out and let hair air dry. The rinse will stay good indefinitely.

Leave-In Conditioner

Straightening, curling, dying, blow-drying, even braiding—any kind of styling can damage the hair. Help strengthen and repair each strand with a leave-in conditioner. Using this moisturizing DIY formula as little as once a week can bring new life to frizzy, dry hair.

Ingredients

½ ounce jojoba oil
¼ ounce vegetable glycerin
10 drops rosemary oil
2 ounces distilled water

Instructions

Combine ingredients into a spray bottle, shake well, and spritz all over hair, avoiding the roots so they don’t get too greasy. Add more water if your hair is fine, or less if it’s thick. Comb through. Use within one month.

BONUS HAIRCARE DIYS

Though a simple shampoo-conditioner duo does the trick on most days, your hair needs a little extra TLC from time to time. Enter these two simple conditioning masks. Both will leave you with luscious-looking locks in as little as 10 minutes.

Yogurt-Honey Hair Mask

The same healthy fats and proteins that make yogurt so good for the body also make it wonderfully nourishing for the hair. Plus, the lactic acid helps banish dry, dead skin cells on the scalp. And adding in moisturizing coconut oil and honey only makes the mask work even better.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons plain yogurt (regular or Greek)
¼ teaspoon coconut oil, melted or whipped
1 tablespoon honey

Instructions

Mix all ingredients thoroughly in a small bowl. Massage mask into scalp, working it from roots to ends. Wrap hair in towel, and leave on for a minimum of 20 minutes to one hour (the longer, the better). Then, rinse well and wash hair with shampoo and a finishing conditioner.

Chlorella-Avocado Hair Mask

Eating your greens isn’t the only way to soak up their nutrients. Now, you can try masking with them, too. A trio of verdant ingredients—powdered chlorella algae, aloe vera gelly, and fresh avocado—bring vitamins and reparative proteins to this hair treatment. Plus, the mid-mask, green-hair look makes for great selfies.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons chlorella
2 tablespoons aloe vera
1 tablespoon of coconut oil
1/4 avocado

Instructions

Mash all ingredients together in a small bowl. Massage into hair, completely covering from roots to ends. Leave on for 10 minutes, then wash out with shampoo and rinse well.

With these DIYs in your beauty arsenal, you’ll be looking (and feeling!) like a hair model in no time.

DIY healing toothpaste and serum

“Do you ever wish your toothpaste magically healed your teeth?

here’s a snippet from someone who found out how:

Me too. When my daughter was 2, she had a defective molar. The dentists said the tooth would last six months to a year.

I went home and started doing research on dental health and what teeth are made of.

I discovered your tooth enamel is made up of many different minerals. Over time your teeth can lose these minerals reducing the strength of your enamel. I found that brushing with a blend of 3 organic natural clays, you can get these minerals to absorb into your enamel.

Over time these minerals will begin to strengthen, and remineralize your teeth. All by having her brush with specific minerals, she was able to SAVE that molar.

Dirty Mouth Toothpowder was created to save my daughters teeth. When it worked, I realized I could help a lot of other people out.” -via Primal Life Organics.

This was an ad for selling their products, which sound great!! And probably are. But wouldn’t you love to make them yourself for much less $$$?

I’ve been making my own products for years and believe me, it’s really easy to clean, whiten, detoxify and strengthen your teeth and gums for less money than you can buy in any store. .

————————–

Their Toothpowder Ingredients :

Bentonite clay, kaolin clay, French green clay, baking soda, and essential oils or flavorings of either peppermint, spearmint, clove bud etc…

—————————-

I add coconut oil to mine to make a paste instead of a powder. Plus a little activated charcoal to really whiten those choppers and detoxify your whole mouth. But if you want to use a powder only, just dip your brush in coconut oil before starting.

Some like to use charcoal separately because of the black color. But if you don’t mind it, the properties are truly whitening magic.

Here’s to your health and the health of your family!

Clean your home green while saving lots of green

We all want the best for our families…what’s good for the environment, our budget, and for our health. Using eco-friendly natural cleansers is a great way to go green. Here are some great tips:

This was previously published at Yahoo Voices in 2009, but since that site is now closed, I’m sharing the full article in it’s entirety here:

We are all making a difference by taking care of our surroundings, and choosing to live ‘greener’ or at least more ‘eco-friendly’. We are teaching our children who will in turn teach their children. And who wouldn’t want to do that? Especially when we are able to do these things without breaking the bank.

I for one, am constantly on the lookout for natural products that don’t cost a fortune. It’s tough being green because all the “organic” and “natural” products are always twice the price of their synthetic counterparts (which is just backwards). But I’ve found a way to clean green without spending too much green.

Making natural cleaners and organic home products is not only fun, but really easy. There’s nothing like the satisfaction of knowing you’ve done something good for yourself, your family and future generations. Who knew cleaning naturally could be so rewarding and at the same time so much fun?

Natural Floor Cleaner

When we had our new Pergo floors installed, the salesman gave me this great recipe for homemade floor cleaner. He told me how great it had worked on his own wood flooring. And since then, I’ve used nothing else. Of course I tweaked the recipe a bit by adding pure essential oils for all their added benefits.
This fantastic floor cleaner can be used on everything from ceramic tile to Pergo, from natural wood to linoleum, it works brilliantly, better than the brand name cleansers– and safer too.

Just find a 16 oz. spray bottle, you can find one at the dollar store (or use a sanitized recycled one).
Fill the 16 oz. spray bottle with:

  • 1/3 distilled water,
  • 1/3 distilled white vinegar,
  • and 1/3 alcohol

Rubbing alcohol works fine, but better still would be grain alcohol for a less ether smell.
Add about 2-3 drops of natural liquid Castile soap, or liquid dish soap, and about 25 drops of pure essential oils such as; Lavender, Grapefruit, Tangerine, Rosemary, Lemon or Orange essential oil.
Shake well before each use.

To Use: Spray small sections of floor from about 18 in. away, and clean as you go (works best if you spray and let sit for about 30 sec. to a minute). For tougher spots, spray and let sit for 1 minute and re-spray right before cleaning. Smells great! Cleans great! And best of all it doesn’t hurt you, your family or your environment! This bottle usually lasts me about a month or so and is so cost effective; you’ll never have to purchase one of those expensive brands ever again.

Air Freshener

To make this eco-friendly air-freshener, just add distilled water to a spray bottle, a few other easy ingredients, and add 30-40 drops of your favorite/favorites essential oils from the following list:

The essential oils are listed in descending order of anti-bacterial/antiseptic qualities (approx.), as well as other suggested e.o.s for a nice air freshener;

Thyme, Tea Tree, Clove, Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Cinnamon,
and Lavender, Sandalwood, Orange, Grapefruit, Tangerine, Geranium, Rose, Jasmine, Neroli.

Each one is excellent for purifying and cleaning the air. You may choose a combination of your favorites, or use only one of them. It won’t really matter, they all work brilliantly.

Just dissolve 30-40 drops of your chosen essential oils into 10 ml of grain alcohol (not isopropyl, something like Everclear or other neutral grain spirit );

or you can also use 10ml of mentholated spirits instead.

Add that mixture to approx. 500 ml (16 ounces) of distilled water.

Shake well to mix (and be sure to shake before each use)

Spray wherever you want a fresh scent while cleaning the air.

Be sure to always label your bottles. I use a Sharpie and write “Shake & Spray Air Freshener” and the ‘scent’ I’ve used so I won’t forget to shake the contents each time and with a glance see the ingredients clearly. It helps to add the date as well so you know when to make a fresh bottle. It’s best to discard unused portions after a month or so and start fresh.

Natural All Purpose Cleaner

I use this all purpose cleaner on almost everything except the floors. It works just as good as the more expensive natural brands.

  • 2 teaspoons borax
  • 1/2 teaspoon liquid soap
  • 2 cups hot water
  • Optional essential oil blend (lavender, orange, lemon or whatever scent you like) approx. 5-25 drops

Combine the washing soda, borax, and soap in a spray bottle. Pour in the hot water (it will dissolve the minerals), screw on the lid, and shake to completely blend and dissolve. Just spray and wipe away. For tough to clean surfaces, leave it on for a few minutes before wiping it off.

Shake well before each use.

Storage: Leave in a labeled spray bottle w/date, use in one month.

Soft Scrub Cleaner

This great cleaner is especially good for those glass top stoves, and is so simple to make you probably have these everyday items in your kitchen handy enough to make this whenever needed.
This scrub can be used on the bathtub, sinks, shower, even delicate marble or Formica counter tops. Just use ½ cup baking soda with enough liquid soap (organic castile soap is the best) to make a frosting like consistency. You can add 5 to 10 drops of an antibacterial essential oil, such as lavender, lemon, or orange (optional of course, but I think it adds more benefits– like orange oil with its awesome grease cutting properties).
Scoop your soft scrub mixture onto the surface that you want cleaned with a sponge, then scrub, wash, and rinse. Make only as much as you will use at the time as this recipe will dry out in a short time.
Mold Cleaner / Inhibitor: Tea Tree Treasure;

This mixture can last for months and is super easy to make. Just add 2 tsp. of Tea Tree Oil (5ml = 1 tsp) to 2 cups water (16 ounces = 480ml); Shake well before use and spray on problem areas. Do not Rinse. The strong odor will dissipate in a day or so. Store in a cool dry place with an appropriate label.

_______________________________

I hope you find many wonderful uses for these natural recipes in your ‘green’ home. Try them once, and see how much you save…you’ll go back to these recipes again and again after you realize they work just as good if not better than their more expensive counterparts. Plus, isn’t it great knowing you’re doing something good for future generations by helping to keep our world beautiful instead of adding more pollutants and toxins?

Clean Your Home “Green” While Saving Lots of Green

How to Make Environmentally Friendly Laundry Detergent, Air Fresheners & Other Household Cleaners

How to MAKE YOUR OWN “Green” LAUNDRY DETERGENT
This is really much easier than you think, it works great, will be gentler on the environment (and your septic system), and will save you money.

With this recipe, you’ll only be spending about $0.01 – $0.02 per load of wash. Wow, huh?
First, gather your ingredients for the 1:1:1 ratio of; borax, powdered soap and washing soda (not baking soda).

You can get the inexpensive unscented or hypoallergenic soap (comes in a pack of three) and grate it into a fine powder (this is the most time consuming part of the whole recipe but quite worth it).

Then mix everything together and scent the soap powder with a few drops of the essential oil of your choice. You can use whichever one(s) you want. I like to change it up and use different scents / essential oils everytime;

Like- lavender and vanilla,

or tangerine and grapefruit,

or jasmine and lemon…whatever you like.

Just make sure to not over-do the scenting with essential oils. Use less than you think you’ll need, adding only a drop or two at a time and mixing well.

One trick is to let it set over night and give it a sniff the next morning so it has time to permeate the whole batch. Never use essential oils directly on the skin and test patch for allergies first. You’ll find that you use a lot less than you think you’ll need. Just remember less is more!

TO USE:

You only need to use about one tablespoon of this homemade laundry soap mixture per load. It cleans clothes really well and it’s an all around winner.

It’s best to add detergent to the water before you add the clothes so the powder is fully dissolved. You don’t want to end up with soap spots on your clothes!

Congratulations! You just ‘greened’ your laundry and saved a bunch of $$$!!!

You are a fabulous frugalista!!!

Essential oils: JUST THE ESSENTIALS

I found some information today I thought you might like to know…

Did you know Americans spent over $374 BILLION dollars in healthcare in 2014?
Per person, we spend 40% more than any other nation. And if you take into account the entire medical industry the number is simply staggering: $3.8 Trillion dollars. (Yes, that’s with a “T”!)

image

That’s more than the entire Gross Domestic Product for 87% of the countries of the world! And yet, despite spending all that money, America is still ranked 17th in terms of quality of health.

So why am I bringing this up? After all, you’re here to learn about essential oils, right?
I bring these figures up because if you’re like the majority of Americans, you know (deep down inside) that there is a better way to health. A more natural way to health.

image

The Most Powerful Forms Of Healing Are Found Right Here On God’s Green Earth.

Mother Nature knows more than humans will ever know. And she provides everything we could ever need to maintain vibrant health well into our mature years.

And I don’t care what the “officials” say – something made from chemicals in a lab will never work better than what Mother Nature can come up with. The irony is… most of the treatments are created in a lab today is just trying to duplicate what Nature already does.

So why do companies spend decades… and billions of dollars… doing this? Simple: You can’t patent a plant or natural process. And if you can’t patent it… you can’t make money!

(Heaven forbid they spend all that money to actually make peoples lives easier and more pain free.)

image

Essential oils are today’s natural miracle remedies… yet the practice of using essential oils has been around for thousands of years.

image

In fact, using essential oils dates back to the ancient Egyptians. And in many ancient texts the oils were often referred to as “nectar of the Gods.”

There are also over 500 references to essential oils in the Bible. Obviously these miracles of Mother Nature were highly revered by Ancient Man.

When I first learned about Essential Oils my first thought was “how could something so simple actually improve my health?”

But as I did more research and learned how they really work, I was amazed.

Because lately I’ve seen a lot of articles popping up on Facebook, Twitter and other social sites talking about them and a lot of the information is, how do I say this politely… scary!

Not to mention it’s not very accurate.

So the purpose of this site is to share with you information on Essential Oils that can help you make wise choices.

Especially as you start to incorporate them into your life to improve your health and well being.

If you are already familiar with them, then you also know, we are forever learning about their wonders.

I’ve been working with essential oils for over 20 years and still learn something new everyday.

Be aware of the quality of essential oils you are purchasing. It truly makes a difference… especially if you’re using them for health purposes.
If the oil is really cheap, there’s a reason for that. Just do your research before buying. And don’t be afraid to ask them lots of questions.

#FYI:
Did you know 5% of all essential oils are made for the food and fragrance industry?

There are hundreds of compounds in just one essential oil, but not all oils are used for healing purposes.

The fragrance industry is only interested in pleasant aromas. In a lab they remove only those parts of the oil that give the arona profile and they throw the rest out.

The food industry only want the elements that lend good flavor. So lab technicians remove only selections that taste like mint, peppermint, cinnamon, etc., and use small amounts to flavor the things they make. Most of the total healing natural elements are completely removed.

In pure, high quality essential oils, all of the compounds are left in tact so that you can experience the fully health benefits that Mother Nature intended.
