Ginger in perfumery and aromatherapy

I love the spicy, sexy, fresh, and sometimes earthy scent of ginger! It’s perfect for the cold winter months, and is such a lovely warming essential oil, I’m sure you’ll find some wonderful uses for it. Read on for more ideas.

It’s a fabulous essential oil to use in perfumery or aromatherapy for a number of reasons. I found  lots of great info….(thank you CaFleureBon! and Divine Caroline!)

Ginger is a spice, biting sometimes, fresh and mild if young and tender, hot and fragrant when mature, and quite potent when old.  It may be called gingembre in French, gingifere in Old English, even inji ver (Tamil) or by its scientific name Zingiber officinale.  Other members of this fragrant family include ginger lily, galangal (Thai ginger), turmeric, and cardamom.  Ginger lily rhizomes and flowers both produce fragrant products that may be distilled or extracted for perfumery. There are more than 1000 species in the ginger family from Africa, Asia, and the Americas and many of them are fragrant. All have large rhizomes or underground stems that are fleshy and often spicy.  Many are used as ornamental plants having unusual flowers and attractive foliage. The flowers and leaves may also be used in food preparation in addition to the rhizome.  From this large family with scented leaves, flowers, seeds, and rhizomes we get a wondrous variety of fragrant products but it is ancient and complex ginger that is most familiar and perhaps most widely used.

Ginger can be used in aromatherapy preparations to reduce nausea, inflammation and help circulation. Ginger is also a very strong antiseptic and antibacterial and is widely used in many countries to prevent or heal colds and just to support the immune system.

The combination of orange (citrus, fresh, and sweet) and ginger (spicy, warm, and radiant) is a harmonious delight, very unique in character and is set apart as one of the best energizing duos of aromatherapy.

Ginger essential oil is used in perfumery to add spice and depth to Oriental or spice blends. It’s also valuable for incense or gourmand fragrances and a tiny bit will add interest to florals.  When fresh ginger is distilled it keeps a light, lemony and fresh ginger note that is lovely with citruses and tropical florals. Fresh ginger essential oil has a true zingy ginger odor highlighted by a lemony topnote while the other has a deep, spicy, woody scent sometimes accompanied by a hint of earthiness. Fresh ginger essential oil adds an interesting unique vibrancy to oriental perfumes. While it is often compared to black pepper or cinnamon bark, its spice is fresh and uplifting. Fresh ginger is unexpected and original and adds freshness, heat and spice to floral blends. It blends well with amber, bitter orange, petitgrain and pink lotus. It is worth seeking out a truly great fresh ginger as many ginger essential oils on the market can have a “cooked” note and lack the vibrancy that a good quality fresh ginger oil possesses. Two types of essential oil are produced from ginger, one from the dried rhizome and one from the fresh rhizome. There are three main components, zingerone, shogaols, and gingerols that make up about 1 – 3 percent of the weight and give the characteristic odor and flavor.

There are over 1000 species of the ginger family. The whole plant has a fragrance, but mostly the roots (actually rhizomes ) are used. There are so many uses of ginger root: esthetics, perfumery, medicinal, culinary. Ginger flowers are big red or pink bud clusters, commonly used in the floral and landscape design industry for their bright colors, strong stems and long-lasting flowers.

Ginger can stimulate the circulatory system and warm the body, all influences that may contribute to its effects as an aphrodisiac. It also increases the heart rate and circulation. Perhaps the spicy rich fragrance is also a signal for romance and passion.  Avicenna, the ancient Arab physician credited ginger with increasing lustful yearnings and as a cure for impotence.  The French Courtesan, Madame du Barry, who was mistress to Louis XV, was said to feed ginger to her lovers to make them completely submissive to her desires.  The Kama Sutra mentions it as an enhancement for love making.  In Senegal women have worn belts containing ginger roots to enhance their partner’s desire and it has been used in love rituals throughout Asia and the South Pacific. Sometimes known as the plant of burning desire, ginger has spice, it has a sweet richness, it has complexity and a sharp tang.  Keep a bit of ginger around as an important ingredient in the formula of love.

Ginger for Stomach Upsets and Pregnancy Morning Sickness
It is believed that ginger (zingiber officinale) was brought to Europe between the 10th and 15th century to be used as a condiment. It has been used for medicinal purposes since the ancient times and is recorded specifically in both Chinese and Sanskrit writings. It is also mentioned in the classic literature from the Greeks and was used in the sybaritic sanctuaries of the Romans. The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the ginger root.

Ginger has been revered for thousands of years as a universal medicine, especially in countries such as China and India. The Spanish introduced ginger to the West Indies in the 16th century, and today it is renowned for its healing properties and recognized as a popular spice. Ginger root is well known as a culinary herb used in Asian cooking, but in aromatherapy, ginger essential oil kicks a punch for many different aliments, especially fast relief for easing an upset stomach.

It may be inhaled from a tissue to alleviate indigestion and morning sickness during pregnancy. Ginger oil is a nice addition to your massage oil or body scrub, as it can ease minor aches and pains. The warming properties of ginger oil makes it a wonderful choice for a soothing yet invigorating bath and will help improve circulation.

For treating bruises and sores on the skin, ginger is one of the best oils and rubbing it on the affected areas should speed the healing process, and ease the pain associated with the injury. In steam inhalations, it is helpful for colds and flu, and its germicidal properties make it an excellent choice to combat infections. As one of the more odoriferous oils, ginger should be used in moderation, but as you can see, the affinity with orange is unmistakable.

The emphasis when blending essential oils is on the final aroma, not its therapeutic properties. Orange and ginger together create a beautiful fragrant bouquet, with the added bonus being that they also work really well therapeutically.

Orange and Ginger Massage Blend
Add three drops of orange and two drops ginger to your favorite carrier oil. The best carrier oils to use when making a massage blend are jojoba oil and sesame seed oil. Jojoba oil has a very similar chemical makeup to our own skin’s composition, plus during massage, it keeps the skin lubricated to prevent damage. Sesame seed oil plays a vital role because it penetrates into the skin readily and helps remove toxins. A basic massage blends consist of four to five drops of essential oils and one cup of carrier oil. Shake to mix well. Read the rest of divine carolines’s article here.

Fight Allergies Naturally ; Allergy Blend Recipe, Immune Boosting Essential Oils, Allergen Home Spray Recipe

Spring with all it’s glory is in full swing for sure, there’s no better way for me to revel in all of it’s  magnificent beauty than to lace up my tennis shoes and enjoy a morning walk. Not only does it do my mind, body and spirit wonders; it really puts a smile on my face and gives me an extra boost that seems to last the rest of the day…

If you’re like me, as much as I enjoy being outside during spring, the pollen can really do a number on my sinuses, and I get terrible headaches, runny eyes, and a stuffy nose that runs from morning till night.  These natural remedies really do help.

  1. Neti Pot and saline rinse
  2. Local Honey
  3. Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
  4. Probiotics (boost immune system)
  5. Quercetin is a natural bioflavonoid that is said to help stabilize mast cells to keep them from releasing histamine. It is also a potent antioxidant that is said to help reduce inflammation. It is best used as a long term remedy and many people start taking it about 4-6 weeks before allergy season to help prevent allergy symptoms. As with any herb, you should check with your doctor before using, especially if you have a liver problem, are pregnant, or are on hormonal contraceptives.

To Use: Though Quercetin is naturally found in foods like citrus and broccoli, it is very difficult to get the amount needed to relive allergies from food alone. A supplemental dose can be helpful for preventing allergies or helping acute symptoms. Not recommended during pregnancy or nursing though some practitioners feel it is safe after the first trimester and while nursing.

Living with allergies is no fun, and can be completely miserable for those who suffer with them. Even the simple act of getting out of bed may be too much for those who have a terrible case of allergies.

And with all the over-the-counter medicines, you never really know what you are putting into your body. Some of the chemicals used may be just as bad as the allergies they are suffering with, and may even worsen some of the symptoms, and almost as bad, mask the problems so they are never really rid of the root causes completely. This is just another reason people are turning to natural remedies.

An Allergy is a hypersensitivity disorder of the immune system, or an exaggerated immune response or reaction to substances that are generally not harmful.

So, building up your immune system is the best way to deal with the root of your allergies.

Finding the root cause of the allergy is your biggest asset and will eventually help lead you to dealing with the problem once and for all.

Start by giving your immune system a big step up by getting some sunshine, and enough sleep, eat lots of veges, fruits, nuts and seeds, garlic, mushrooms…—>A study in older adults showed that boosting fruit and vegetable intake improved antibody response to the Pneumovax vaccine, which protects against Streptococcus pneumonia.

Natural Immune Boosting Tips:

  • Consider probiotics. Studies indicate supplements reduce the incidence of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections.  Fermented milk products have also been shown to reduce respiratory infections in adults and kids.
  • Catch some rays. Sunlight triggers the skin’s production of vitamin D. In the summer, a 10-15 minute exposure (minus sunscreen) is enough. However, above 42 degrees latitude (Boston) from November through February, sunlight is too feeble and few foods contain this vitamin. Low vitamin D levels correlate with a greater risk of respiratory infection. A 2010 study in kids showed that 1200 IU a day of supplemental vitamin D reduced the risk of influenza A. However, a 2012 study that involved supplementing adults with colon cancer with 1000 IU a day failed to demonstrate protection against upper respiratory infections.
  • Go for the garlic. Garlic is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent and immune booster. Because heat deactivates a key active ingredient, add it to foods just before serving.
  • Eat medicinal mushrooms, such as shiitake and maitake (sometimes sold as “hen of the woods”). A recent study showed that a concentrated extract of shiitake enhanced immune function in women with breast cancer.
  • Try immune-supportive herbs. If you get recurrent infections, consider taking immune-supportive herbs such as eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticocus), Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng), American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius), or astragalus (A. membranaceus).
  • Make an echinacea tincture. This is good to have on hand when respiratory viruses overwhelm your defenses.

Essential oils are one great way to give a boost to your immune system.

Essential oils used properly can also help those suffering from allergies get some relief, and for some, even help rid them of the allergy entirely.

Before attempting to make ANY of these recipes or use essential oils, please do your homework.

Essential oil safety should be first on your list, especially when first starting out on your aromatherapy journey.

Treat essential oils with the same care that you treat medicines. You don’t need to be afraid or avoid essential oils and I’m certainly not trying to scare anyone out of enjoying all the benefits that aromatherapy offers. They can be an amazing blessing within a holistic lifestyle. Do remember, however, that when working with essential oils, less is more.

Dilute your essential oils prior to use on the skin and avoid the oils that are more likely to cause irritation and sensitization. When using an essential oil for the first time, do a skin patch test. You can learn how to do a skin patch test by reading AromaWeb’s Aromatherapy Safety article.

Here are a list of great essential oils that are wonderful for boosting the immune system;

Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, Rosemary, Oregano, Lemon, Cinnamon, Frankincense, Vetiver, Thyme, Savory, Niaouli, Ravensara, Peppermint, Clove, Palmarosa, Coriander, Bergamot, Geranium, and Bay Laurel.

Immune-Boost Blend

I make a wonderful Immune Boost Blend that packs a powerful punch, and really does what it says…boosts  the immune system and gives your body great tools for the fight.

Also, Read this post I wrote about allergies, you may find some good tips in there to help, See it here.

Allergen Home Spray Recipe

To make this spray, I went to a trusted company whom everyone seems to buy their products in the local grocery and found the following:

I looked up the ingredients in the most popular home allergen spray-

Clorox® Anywhere® Anti-Allergen Fabric Spray – Product Details

Ingredients include: (Water, Sodium Carbonate, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Hypochlorite).

which is basically, washing soda, salt, and bleach diluted heavily with water!

Washing soda is a highly alkaline chemical compound that can be used to remove stubborn stains from laundry. It also has numerous uses around the house, and it is used in a range of industrial applications as well. Washing soda should not be confused with washing powder, which is a powdered soap used as a detergent; it is also not the same thing as baking soda, although the two compounds are closely related.- read more here

It would be simple to make your own large bottle of this home allergen spray, which would save you scads of money.

Here’s how you would make your own—In a 16 oz spray bottle (from the dollar store) you would use mostly purified water (bottle filled almost to the top with hot purified water to dissolve the rest of the ingredients) add  a little washing soda (about a TBL.) and salt (about a TBL), and a tiny bit of bleach (about a tsp.), shake well and walla! Homemade allergen spray!

Though, this does not include any essential oils for extra benefits. Which would be where you’d just add about 1/8 oz, or about a dram of E.O.s to it and shake it up! That’s it! Try using my Allergy Relief Blend.
