Essential Oil Recipe Blends & Dilutions for Energy Work; Clearing & Balancing the Chakras

If you’re interested in making your own essential oil blends, or just wondered what might go into specific recipes for energy work, read on, I have a real treat for you. This was originally written for YahooContributor back in ’09, but since they’ve shut down the site, it needed a home.

It includes:

Primer, “Rose Base” Recipe (used in many of the following recipes), Clearing Room Spray, Positive Energy Spray, Setting Up Boundaries or for Protection Blend, Asking for Spiritual Guidance Blend, Clearing the Aura After Energy Healing Work Blend, and a beautiful Facial Winter Spritzer.

 First, a primer, or a little refresher course-

 About Dilution of Essential Oils:

Almost all pure essential oils should be used diluted (mixed with a carrier such as sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, etc.), especially if you will be using them on the skin. Remember that essential oils are extremely concentrated, as they include the whole spirit or “life blood” of the plant, flower, resin or root they originated from. Did you know that it takes 30 large roses to make 1 drop of rose oil, and 60,000 roses (about 180 lbs. of rose petals) to make 1 ounce of Rose oil? Now you know why it is so expensive!

Really, none of the essential oils should be applied neat (undiluted) with the exception of lavender or tea tree essential oils. And remember too, that they come from natural plants so some may be allergic to their properties. Please try a patch test before using any essential oil blend on your skin by applying 1 drop of diluted essential oil to the inside of your elbow, cover it with a band-aid and leave for 24 hours to check for allergic reaction.

Dilution Ratios for Blends and Essential Oil Recipes

Using the following ratios for your essential oil blends and recipes should keep you within the safe zone.

  • 60 drops e.o. / 1 oz. carrier = 10% dilution ( for room sprays, aromatic spritzers, + inhalers)
  • 30 drops of e.o. (like rose, jasmine, neroli, sandalwood, etc.) to 1 oz carrier such as Fractionated Coconut Oil or Jojoba makes 5% dilution.
  • 20 drops e.o. / 1 oz = 3% dilution.
  • 15 drops essential oils / 1 oz of carrier is called a 2.5% “normal” dilution.
  • 9 drops essential oils / 1 oz of carrier would constitute a “light dilution”, also called a 1.5% dilution.
  • 6 drops e.o. / 1 oz carrier is 1% dilution
  • FOR INFANTS or SMALL CHILDREN, ELDERLY or PREGNANT use 3-6 drops e.o.  / 1 oz of carrier for a  0.5-1% dilution
  • There’s about 600 total drops in 1 fluid ounce if you want to figure out a different dilution percentage.

Body sprays can handle up to 60 drops of e.o. per every 4 ounces of carrier, and for room sprays, up to 100 drops per every 4 ounces of water (or carrier) is the normal range .

 ON to the good stuff!!

Extending Expensive Essential Oils and “Rose Base” Recipe:

Creating a 5% or 10% dilution is also a great way to extend the life of the more expensive oils (like rose, sandalwood, jasmine or neroli). For example, to make a “rose base” add 30 drops of rose otto to 1 ounce of fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil –because of their little to no scent and long lasting properties – use this as your “scented base” for the recipes calling for rose.

If you have a really nice rose otto or rose absolute use this method to really open up the scent, as right out of the bottle rose absolute is quite overpowering and bombards the senses. With most essential oils it seems the more they are diluted, the more delicate the aroma, allowing the scent to fully open and be appreciated for all its attributes. Essential oils like lemon or lavender do not need to be stored this way, as they are light enough to begin with, so just keep them in the dark bottles they came in, and store in a cool and dark place.

For Energy Work use this Cleansing and Clearing Blend:

  • 25 drops of Lavender,
  • 20 drops of Rosemary,
  • 20 drops of Lemon,
  • 15 drops of Cedarwood (Atlas),
  • 5 drops of Eucalyptus,
  • 5 drops of Juniper,
  • 5 drops of Pine, and
  • 5 drops of “rose base”
  • in 4 ounces of purified water

Makes a lovely room or “space-clearing” spray, or use a few drops of the undiluted blend in a diffuser.

Use a “normal” or “light” dilution if using as a body spray. Make sure to always shake well before each use.

MORE RECIPES:

Positive Energy Spray:

  • 4 ounces of purified (or distilled) water
  • 10 drops of “Rose base”,
  • 10 drops of cedarwood (Atlas),
  • 7 drops of vetiver,
  • 7 drops rosewood ,
  • 9 drops of lavender,
  • 6 drops “neroli base”,
  • 12 drops pink grapefruit,
  • 12 drops of orange,
  • 12 drops of tangerine,
  • 8 drops of lemon,
  • 8 drops of bergamot (BF–bergaptene free)

Shake well and use as a room spray. For a body spray, use about 45-60 drops of this blend and add it to 4 ounces of distilled or purified water, shake well each time before use.

Cleansing and Positive Energy Combination Spray:

To cleanse the space and bring positive energy at the same time, you might want to try one of these combinations:

  • 30 drops Pink Grapefruit,
  • 25 drops Lemon,
  • 25 drops Tangerine, and
  • 20 drops Lavender
  • with 4 ounces purified water.

Or

  • 35 drops Cedarwood (Atlas),
  • 35 drops Grapefruit,
  • 20 drops of Orange, and
  • 10 drops “rose base”
  • added to 4 ounces of purified water.

Always shake well before using.

Setting up Boundaries or Protection blend:

You might want to use this blend to aid in protecting your space from negativity or bad energy:

  • 1 drop fennel,
  • 3 drops of rosemary,
  • 3 drops of juniper,
  • 8 drops of lemon,
  • 2 drops of hyssop and
  • 3 drops of vetiver
  • diluted into 1-4 ounces of carrier

You can use a few drops of this blend for an anointing oil, or use a few drops of the blend diluted in 4 ounces of purified water as a spray.

Asking for Spiritual Guidance blend:

Add 1 drop of the following blend placed on the “third eye” chakra before meditation or asking for spiritual guidance:

  • 7 drops of cedarwood (Atlas),
  • 3 drops “neroli base”,
  • 3 drops of “rose base”,
  • 2 drops of jasmine,
  • 1 tiny drop of angelica (pre-diluted at in a carrier as angelica is VERY strong),
  • 1 drop of both German and Roman chamomiles,
  • 7 drops of lavender,
  • 4 drops of geranium,
  • 1 drop of cistus (pre-diluted in a carrier) and
  • 4 drops of frankincense (pre-diluted in a carrier)

blended into 1 ounce of jojoba, sweet almond, grapeseed, or unscented coconut oil,

this may also be added to 2 ounces of purified water to make a spray if you’d rather not place anointing blend directly on skin.

To clear the Aura after Energy Healing work;

It is best to use a drop of rose base diluted in purified water sprayed around you, or one drop of rose base diluted in a carrier oil as an anointing oil to clear the aura, though, the clearing spray works fine too.

Facial Spritzer Winter Recipe:

A nice winter facial spritzer for almost all skin types

  • 3 drops of the “rose base”
  • and 3 drops of the “neroli base”
  • ( no more than 10 drops total maximum)

added to 4 ounces of one of the following;

  • purified water,
  • rose,lavender or neroli hydrosols,
  • or even distilled water.

My favorite facial spritzer in the winter is;

  • 4 oz. of neroli hydrosol,
  • 4 drops of “neroli base” (you can also use a 3% dilution for any of the “base” recipes such as “rose base” or “neroli base” ),
  • 2 drops of geranium,
  • 2 drops of sandalwood and
  • 2 drops of bergamot; but make sure the bergamot is bergaptene free (or bf). Bergaptene content in regular bergamot causes photosensitivity and since the bergaptene has been removed in this type, it allows it to be used in skin and hair care formulations without worrying about sun exposure after use.

Mix together the essential oils and hydrosols in a dark glass or PET plastic (PET is a type of plastic that can withstand essential oils) spray bottle, shake well before each use, and spray over face anytime for a nice moisturizing spritz.

Scientific research regarding health and medical applications of essential oils is going on regularly at universities and other facilities around the world. Many of these studies are immediately applicable to aromatherapy practitioners for improved health and well-being, while others spark interest in the potential of essential oils as a part of future medicine protocols. Here’s a look at two important journal publications just released about direct effects of essential oils in the brain, reviewed by the staff at Ananda Aromatherapy of Boulder, Colorado.

In the first study, performed at the Institute for Environmental Sciences at the University of Shizuoka Japan, Tarragon, Inula, Lavender and Tulsi~Holy Basil were tested for their ability to inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. In other words, their ability to prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, the primary information-handling neurotransmitter. Supplements with this action are becoming more and more popular with regular folks trying to increase their smarts, and are used to treat dementia (Alzheimer’s) by increasing the amount of acetylcholine in the brain.

Of the essential oils tested, Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) produced in France had the highest inhibition of acetylcholinesterase, though all the oils tested showed significant AChE inhibitory activity. All the oils were analyzed by GC/MS to find the individual natural chemical constituents of the oils which produced this effect. Of real interest is that 1,8-Cineol had the greatest inhibitory activity of all the constituents examined. Why this this interesting? Rosemary essential oil has long been considered a mental stimulant (we find in the office to be particularly brightening) and has been studied for this effect, improving mental focus in humans through a variety of tests. The primary component of Rosemary essential oil is 1,8-Cineol (it is also a major constituent of Eucalyptus oils, used for invigorating massages and steam treatments).

Also of great interest was that the effect of these constituents relative to their amounts in the complete natural essential oil was not very high — meaning the complete essential oil, with nature’s balance of the chemical constituents, was synergistically more effective than the singly-extracted molecules. This is a theme in aromatherapy: that the complete natural essential oil will generally have more benefits than a single ‘active ingredient’ extracted in a laboratory — Therapeutic grade oils are those that retain the natural balance of the plant’s, with proper harvesting and distillation methods.

The second study very much ties in with the first, as it demonstrates the ability of Lemon essential oil to directly prevent dementia (Alzheimer’s).

How can you benefit from these studies? The best method is to find a cold-air nebulizing diffuser. These employ no water or other carrier, and make a very fine mist of essential oils that easily evaporate into your room. These are the only diffusers that create high concentrations of essential oils in the air — enough to show measurable biochemical effects. A ‘warming’ diffuser or other non-nebulizing style will allow you to smell the aroma, though the concentration will be significantly lower.

notes on diluting essential oils for perfumes

As Robin Lander from Simpler’s Botanicals states, “Creating your own fragrances is a playful art, requiring little more than intuition, imagination, a passion for aroma, and attention to a few simple guidelines. There are no absolute rules as to which oils blend well together, so feel free to experiment! But remember, your blend will be greatly enhanced by using the highest quality pure plant essential oils you can find.”

I couldn’t agree more, but one thing to keep in mind before even beginning your perfume playtime is to always, always dilute your essential oils before using them in a blend. Essential oils are super concentrated substances, and most don’t even have a beautiful aroma right out of the bottle. Most will open up and become the beautiful scents they are ONLY when highly diluted. I like to use either jojoba, or fractionated coconut oil as they both have little to no scent, and help the essential oil last longer.

Take jasmine, for instance; a popular essential oil in many perfumes. Jasmine in it’s purely concentrated form is highly floral to a point that it’s almost cloying, while putting off a dizzying and narcotic act upon the nervous system in that form, and will only give up it’s beautiful melange of notes after it is highly diluted.  Same goes for rose, neroli, and most other essential oils you might want to use in a perfume blend.

Perfumes or scents, however, exert not only an agreeable impression on the olfactory organ, but their effect extends to the entire nervous system, which they stimulate; when used in excess, they are apt to cause headache in sensitive persons; the laborers in the chemical factories where these substances are produced on a large scale, occasionally even suffer by reason of their stimulating action on the nerves.

For this reason perfumes should never be employed otherwise than in a very dilute condition; this necessity arises from a peculiarity of the odorous substances which when concentrated and pure have by no means pleasant smell and become fragrant only when highly diluted.

Oil of roses, of orange flowers or of jasmine in fact nearly all aromatic substances have an almost disagreeable odor when concentrate; only in an extremely dilute state they yield those delightful scents which we admire so much in the blossoms from which they are derived.

Aromaweb suggests, (which I agree completely with) that aromatic blending for the sheer pleasure of the aroma is a combination of creativity and science. When using a blend created primarily for its fragrance, therapeutic benefit can also occur. The focus of the blend, however, is on the final aroma, not its therapeutic properties.

Safety precautions should be followed for any type of blending, including for aromatic blending. For instance, you would still want to be extremely careful when using Bergamot because of its phototoxic properties and still avoid using all hazardous oils and all oils that are contraindicated for conditions that you have. Blending Tips

  • When creating a new blend, start out small with a total number of drops of either 5, 10, 20 or 25 drops. 25 drops should be the most that you start with. By starting small, you waste less oil in your blending experiments.
  • Start creating your blend by only using essential oils, absolutes or CO2s. After you have designed the blend, then you can dilute it by adding carrier oils, alcohol, etc. If you hate the blend you created, you have then not wasted any carrier oils or alcohol.
  • Keep a notebook that lists each oil that you used with the number of drops used for each oil. When the creative juices flow, it is easy to get carried away and later forget the exact recipe for your blend; one drop too much or too little of even one oil can drastically change the aroma of your blend. When you find that perfect blend, you want to be able to reduplicate it, and it’s near impossible if you didn’t take notes! If you are especially ambitious, it’s also a wise idea to note the vendor name of the oil that you used as the aroma and quality of oils do vary between vendors (even with the same vendor, the aroma of oils can vary from batch to batch, due to crop fluctuations and resourcing).
  • To store your beautiful creations, perfume sample bottles and 2ml amber “shortie” bottles are very inexpensive and can often be purchased from aromatherapy vendors and glass bottle companies.
  • Be sure to label your blends clearly. If you don’t have enough room to specify exactly what your blend is, label it with a number that corresponds to a number in your notebook.
  • Start off your blending experiments by creating blends that are made up in the following ratio (you do not have to be exact – this is just a guideline to get you started): 30% of the oils are top notes, 50% are middle notes, and 20% are base notes. See the chart above to find out what oils belong to each category.
  • Some oils are much stronger than others, especially the absolutes and CO2s. Study oils you wish to use in a given blend and observe the oils that have the strongest aromas. Unless you want those oils to dominate the blend, you will want to use dramatically less of the stronger oils in your blend.
  • To learn more about the strength of oils, it is useful to experiment. Begin by adding one drop of a selected essential oil to 4 drops carrier oil. This will result in a 20% dilution. Smell it and study the aroma. To obtain a 10% dilution, add 5 more drops of carrier oil. Smell it, study the aroma again, then repeat as desired. This can help educate you on the characteristics and strengths of each essential oil at various dilution ratios.
  • After creating your blend, allow it to sit for a few days before deciding if you love or hate it. The constituents (natural chemicals) contained within the oils will get cozy with each other and the aroma can change, usually rounding out a bit.

About aging and diluting aromatic blends:

When you think you have the blend you like make sure to age your perfume before adding any other carriers or alcohol. Allow the blend to age at least a week or more before adding them to your chosen carrier oils. Usually, a 10% – 15% dilution of essential oil to carrier oil is appropriate for perfume applications and 5 – 15 drops of blend per ounce of carrier oil for healing massage blends. If you don’t immediately love your creation, be patient. Blends undergo great transformations as they age, and over time your ‘mistake’ could evolve into an aromatic treasure.

Full Swing Spring! Natural Remedies for Allergies; Immune Boosting Essential Oils, Allergen Home Spray Recipe, and Allergy Relief Blend Recipe

Spring with all it’s glory is in full swing for sure, there’s no better way for me to revel in all of it’s  magnificent beauty than to lace up my tennis shoes and enjoy a morning walk. Not only does it do my mind, body and spirit wonders; it really puts a smile on my face and gives me an extra boost that seems to last the rest of the day…

If you’re like me, as much as I enjoy being outside during spring, the pollen can really do a number on my sinuses, and I get terrible headaches, runny eyes, and a stuffy nose that runs from morning till night.  These natural remedies really do help.

  1. Neti Pot and saline rinse
  2. Local Honey
  3. Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
  4. Probiotics (boost immune system)
  5. Quercetin is a natural bioflavonoid that is said to help stabilize mast cells to keep them from releasing histamine. It is also a potent antioxidant that is said to help reduce inflammation. It is best used as a long term remedy and many people start taking it about 4-6 weeks before allergy season to help prevent allergy symptoms.As with any herb, you should check with your doctor before using, especially if you have a liver problem, are pregnant, or are on hormonal contraceptives.To Use: Though Quercetin is naturally found in foods like citrus and broccoli, it is very difficult to get the amount needed to relive allergies from food alone. A supplemental dose can be helpful for preventing allergies or helping acute symptoms. Not recommended during pregnancy or nursing though some practitioners feel it is safe after the first trimester and while nursing.

  • Peppermint,-25
  • Pine-Long Leaf, – 20 drops
  • Pine Scotch, – 20 drops
  • Spruce – 30 drops
  • Wild Black Spruce- 12 drops

To make your own allergy relief blend, gather essential oils listed above and a pipette for each (unless they have orifice reducers), and a one ounce dark glass sterilized bottle. This blend may be added to a diffuser, a spray, an inhaler, or even a few drops on a handkerchief carried around with you. If you want to add this to the allergen home spray recipe, for a 16 oz bottle (as recipes lists above) use no more than ¼ oz (7.5 ml), and ideally ⅛ oz (a dram, or 3.75 ml).

Living with allergies is no fun, and can be completely miserable for those who suffer with them. Even the simple act of getting out of bed may be too much for those who have a terrible case of allergies.

And with all the over-the-counter medicines, you never really know what you are putting into your body. Some of the chemicals used may be just as bad as the allergies they are suffering with, and may even worsen some of the symptoms, and almost as bad, mask the problems so they are never really rid of the root causes completely. This is just another reason people are turning to natural remedies.

An Allergy is a hypersensitivity disorder of the immune system, or an exaggerated immune response or reaction to substances that are generally not harmful.

So, building up your immune system is the best way to deal with the root of your allergies.

Finding the root cause of the allergy is your biggest asset and will eventually help lead you to dealing with the problem once and for all.

Start by giving your immune system a big step up by getting some sunshine, and enough sleep, eat lots of veges, fruits, nuts and seeds, garlic, mushrooms…—>A study in older adults showed that boosting fruit and vegetable intake improved antibody response to the Pneumovax vaccine, which protects against Streptococcus pneumonia.

Natural Immune Boosting Tips:

  • Consider probiotics. Studies indicate supplements reduce the incidence of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections.  Fermented milk products have also been shown to reduce respiratory infections in adults and kids.
  • Catch some rays. Sunlight triggers the skin’s production of vitamin D. In the summer, a 10-15 minute exposure (minus sunscreen) is enough. However, above 42 degrees latitude (Boston) from November through February, sunlight is too feeble and few foods contain this vitamin. Low vitamin D levels correlate with a greater risk of respiratory infection. A 2010 study in kids showed that 1200 IU a day of supplemental vitamin D reduced the risk of influenza A. However, a 2012 study that involved supplementing adults with colon cancer with 1000 IU a day failed to demonstrate protection against upper respiratory infections.
  • Go for the garlic. Garlic is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent and immune booster. Because heat deactivates a key active ingredient, add it to foods just before serving.
  • Eat medicinal mushrooms, such as shiitake and maitake (sometimes sold as “hen of the woods”). A recent study showed that a concentrated extract of shiitake enhanced immune function in women with breast cancer.
  • Try immune-supportive herbs. If you get recurrent infections, consider taking immune-supportive herbs such as eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticocus), Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng), American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius), or astragalus (A. membranaceus).
  • Make an echinacea tincture. This is good to have on hand when respiratory viruses overwhelm your defenses.

Essential oils are one great way to give a boost to your immune system.

Essential oils used properly can also help those suffering from allergies get some relief, and for some, even help rid them of the allergy entirely.

Before attempting to make ANY of these recipes or use essential oils, please do your homework.

Essential oil safety should be first on your list, especially when first starting out on your aromatherapy journey.

Treat essential oils with the same care that you treat medicines. You don’t need to be afraid or avoid essential oils and I’m certainly not trying to scare anyone out of enjoying all the benefits that aromatherapy offers. They can be an amazing blessing within a holistic lifestyle. Do remember, however, that when working with essential oils, less is more.

Dilute your essential oils prior to use on the skin and avoid the oils that are more likely to cause irritation and sensitization. When using an essential oil for the first time, do a skin patch test. You can learn how to do a skin patch test by reading AromaWeb’s Aromatherapy Safety article.

To make this spray, I went to a trusted company whom everyone seems to buy their products in the local grocery and found the following:

which is basically, washing soda, salt, and bleach diluted heavily with water!

Washing soda is a highly alkaline chemical compound that can be used to remove stubborn stains from laundry. It also has numerous uses around the house, and it is used in a range of industrial applications as well. Washing soda should not be confused with washing powder, which is a powdered soap used as a detergent; it is also not the same thing as baking soda, although the two compounds are closely related.- read more here

It would be simple to make your own large bottle of this home allergen spray, which would save you scads of money.

Here’s how you would make your own—In a 16 oz spray bottle (from the dollar store) you would use mostly purified water (bottle filled almost to the top with hot purified water to dissolve the rest of the ingredients) add  a little washing soda (about a TBL.) and salt (about a TBL), and a tiny bit of bleach (about a tsp.), shake well and walla! Homemade allergen spray!

 

If you really want to go full diy make your own washing soda by baking plain baking soda,  yes,  you heard right… ople can easily make their own washing soda (sodium carbonate)! Simply heat a box or two of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) in a 400-degree oven for 45 minutes. The carbon dioxide and water given off create washing soda. This is all over the internet, so you can look it up it yourself. You can check to see that it’s changed by appearance, or you can slightly wet your finger and taste the tiniest amount. It will tingle and burn because it’s so caustic (spit it out — don’t swallow — it’s not to eat!). I make all my own washing soda this way, to make my own homemade laundry detergent and dishwashing detergent, and it’s much cheaper than Arm and Hammer’s store-bought and driving to the store.

I buy two boxes of baking soda at 16 ounces each for 45 cents at the local grocery,  so I get 32 ounces of washing soda for less than $1.   It’s cheap and easy, and washing soda is very effective.

For those that want a less harsh version,  just use 1 tbl of baking soda and a tbl of distilled white vinegar in 16 oz spray bottle filled with distilled water,  then shake and spray where needed.  You can always add essential oils if so desired.  

The original recipe does not include any essential oils for extra benefits. So if you like,   just add about 1/8 oz, or about a dram of E.O.s to it and shake it up! That’s it! Try using my Allergy Relief Blend. Or just lavender.  Whatever you like.

Pelargonium roseum is not only beautiful, but happens to be one of the most useful, and wonderful essential oils we have. As you’ll soon see, it’s uses are many and it’s beauty is more than skin deep.

Rose Geranium, or Geranium Rose-

Pelargonium graveolens, the rose-scented geranium, belongs to the same plant genus as the popular red-flowered window box geranium. Geraniums are native to arid areas of South Africa’s Cape Province. The plant is highly drought resistant, thanks to its semi-succulent, water-conserving stems and leaves.

The essential oil in rose geranium leaves has constituents — geraniol, linalol and citronellol — that are also present in rose oil. It’s not surprising that the aroma of geranium’s fragrance resembles that of rose with a musty, minty-green undertone.

Geranium oil has been described as a natural perfume complete unto itself. It’s often used to scent soaps and detergents because, unlike many other essential oils, rose geranium’s aroma profile is not readily affected by the alkaline nature of soap products.

Rose geranium varies much across strains and distillations, in part because the plant is greatly influenced by the climate and soil in which it grows. Geranium oil can range from very sweet and rosy to musty, minty and green. One type of geranium oil, known as Bourbon, has established itself as a premium perfume oil. Bourbon geranium is cultivated and distilled exclusively on the island of Reunion in the Indian ocean. The environment of Reunion has produced a strain of geranium with a very rich, rosy aroma. Perfumers prefer to work with Bourbon oil because it blends well with a wide array of very different oils including clove, sandalwood and lavender.

The main geranium oil-producing regions of the world are found on the African continent, Russia, China and Reunion. Russian and Chinese oils tend to have a greener, fresh-rosy aroma while Egyptian and Reunion oils tend to be heavier and darker.

Geranium oil is distilled from the above-ground parts of the plant. Most of the essential oil glands are found in its leaves. After cutting, the plants are partially dried to increase the yield of oil. That way there’s less water to be vaporized and extracted from the plant material during the distillation.

Popular during the Victorian era, rose geranium was often kept potted in parlors were a fresh sprig was always available to revive the senses. The fresh leaves were also offered in finger bowls at formal dining tables.

Today, geranium is an indispensable aromatherapy oil. It’s one of the best skincare oils, offering relief from congested, oily and dry skin. On an emotional level, geranium promotes stability and balance.

Sunshine Smiles Aromatherapy Recipe

Ingredients

  • 10 drops Bergamot essential oil
  • 10 drops Grapefruit essential oil
  • 15 drops Sweet Orange essential oil
  • 5 drops Rose Geranium essential oil
  • 3 drops Ylang ylang extra essential oil
  • 3 drops Spruce essential oil (or sandalwood for more calming)
  • 4fl oz (125ml) carrier oil of your choice, such as jojoba, grapeseed oil, fractionated coconut oil, hazelnut oil, or any you like.

Directions;

Combine all the ingredients in a dark glass or PET plastic bottle. Store it in a cool, dark place (not your bathroom – it’s too warm and humid.)
To use your aromatherapy bath oil, pour about a tablespoon into the bath after you’ve finished running the water.
Handy Hint: This aromatherapy bath oil is excellent for acne. To boost its acne-fighting powers, use grapeseed oil as the carrier oil (it’s astringent – helps tighten pores and reduce oil production.)

Ylang Ylang (Cananga Odorata); Ylang Ylang III, Ylang Ylang II, Ylang Ylang I, Extra and Complete

An intoxicating aroma that’s steam distilled from the Flowers of the plant Ylang Ylang (pronounced “eelang”) has a characteristically soft, sweet and floral aroma with warm, exotic and sensual undertones. Ylang Ylang III has a lower note with a much less heady aroma than other fractions of the distillation of the flower such as the Ylang Ylang Extra and Ylang Ylang Complete. With its distinctly earthy and grounding quality Ylang Ylang III has an unusually high sesquiterpene chemical content which makes it especially good for calming the body, mind and emotions.

Ylang Ylang in the Malayan language means “flower of the flowers.” A native flower of Madagascar and the Reunion Islands Ylang Ylang essential oil’s fragrant pale yellow blossoms are used to grace a new marriage bed with a blessing of love and lasting happiness.

The Ylang Ylang tree requires care from human hands for its warm, sweet fragrance to develop. Left wild in nature the blossoms of the Ylang Ylang tree have little or no scent. Ylang Ylang trees must be given constant attention and require trimming every two months. The Ylang Ylang blossoms must be picked each fall. As with Jasmine and Rose the blossoms must be harvested early in the morning and immediately prepared for steam distillation.

Ylang Ylang is often distilled in what is called “fractions,” or parts, meaning the distillation process is halted during different stages of distillation and the oils gathered are taken off. Then the distillation is continued.

As with all oils the quality of distillation varies among distillers, as well as crop conditions for that season, as well as the moment chosen for harvesting and distillation. The distiller’s art for the production of exquisite oils is rare and reflected in the price of an oil.

At least three fractions of Ylang Ylang are collected during distillation. (Ylang Ylang I, II, and III). The first distillation Ylang Ylang I is the lightest and considered the most ethereal fragrance and most often prized by perfumers. The stages of distillation are determined according to principles not easily defined, but generally they are broken down by the production time it takes to distill each fraction.

DISTILLATION CATEGORIES: Ylang Ylang Extra (most expensive), Ylang Ylang I, II & III and Ylang Ylang Complete which is the full distillation of the oil without interruption into fractions, or parts.

Ylang Ylang is high in sesquiterpenes. Ylang Ylang III, the last fraction collected during the last hours of distillation, is a slightly thicker, more earthy and less sweet oil, and is composed almost entirely of sesquiterpenes. Sesquiterpenes are a class of chemicals common in higher plants that are naturally occurring alcohols. Sesquiterpenes rarely exist in volatile aromatic oils. When distilled from plant matter sesquiterpene compounds are known to stimulate the liver and endocrine glands. Sesquiterpenes give Ylang Ylang its powerfully antispasmodic and sedative properties.

Inhalation of Ylang Ylang is useful for dispelling fear and anxiety, and the first essential oil to consider when needing help for regulating and balancing the nervous system. Ylang Ylang helps to deepen your respiration for slower more rhythmic breathing and is helpful for treating panic attacks. Research studies show that Ylang Ylang oil stimulates the Central Nervous Systems and helps alleviate depression.

Ylang Ylang essential oil is an excellent natural treatment for soothing tachycardia and hypertension! Often used in massage oil lubricants Ylang Ylang is known for relieving muscular aches and pains. Ylang Ylang oil is helpful for treating PMS symptoms, including Mood Swings and is effective for reducing emotional blockages in the heart region.

These nasty little – painful lesions – are caused by the herpes simplex virus and are contagious. There may be pain or tingling one to two days before the cold sores appear. Cold sores generally clear in seven to ten days. They’re sometimes confused with canker sores, which are not contagious but produce small, painful ulcers in the soft tissues of the mouth, such as the tongue and the walls of the mouth.

Many essential oils can help with viral infections but need to be in your system soon after you are exposed.   Those that suffer from cold sores know there can be many things that ‘trigger’ an outbreak.  Stress,  whether it be from emotional or physical – being run down so a cold or flu can take hold can easily bring on a cold sore.

Prevention is best done by controlling your exposure to stress and of course others with colds and flus.  But once your ‘cold sore’ has attacked, you may get relief by applying a drop of Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) has antiviral properties. In a research study conducted in hospitals and dermatology clinics in Germany, lemon balm cream promoted the healing of blisters in five days compared to 10 days in the control group. Used on regularly, lemon balm cream may decrease the frequency of recurrences.

Also Tea tree (one drop neat) on the blisters several times throughout the day.  Tea Tree can be applied ‘neatly’ which means undiluted.  Lavender may also be applied neatly.  Roman chamomile, Eucalyptus, Bergamot, Peppermint and Geranium may also stop the blistering in it’s tracks.  To apply these other oils first mix them with a small amount of vodka. The best ratio is up to 6 drops in 5 ml of vodka.   Mix well and dab on the blister using a cotton-tip applicator.

A study by the University of Heidelberg found that peppermint essential oil was found to penetrate the skin and have a direct virucidal effect againt the herpes simplex virus. Peppermint oil was also found to be active against an acyclovir-resistant strain of the herpes simpex virus. Although it’s promising, peppermint oil shouldn’t be used until studies have established its safety. Peppermint oil is absorbed through the skin so even small amounts could be toxic. Peppermint oil should never be ingested unless it is therapeutic grade.

Remember everyone’s immune system is different and with Aromatherapy we can try different essential oils – what works for one person may not work for the next.  Usually you can find one that works best for you.  Keep a journal of what you try at each outbreak.  Recording things like how much, how applied and what oil(s) were used.  Soon you will know what works best for you!
If the blisters open up, mixing any of the above essential oils with a small amount of Sweet Almond oil will help to keep the skin moist and less likely to crack.  All essential oils have healing properties and will help your body to heal itself.

So, here’s the essential oil recipe for cold sores:

  • 3 drops lemon balm (melissa)
  • 2 drops tea tree
  • 3 drops lavender
  • 3 drops eucalyptus
  • 3-4 drops geranium
  • 3 drops Roman chamomile
  • 3 drops bergamot

Add to 1 oz of sweet almond oil if you have dried and cracked cold sores,

or 2 oz. vodka for wet/ type cold sores to dry them out and heal them. Shake before each use.

 

Here’s Aura Cacia’s lemon balm essential oil diluted with jojoba, so price is right.

Best prevention for cold sores is to keep stress as low as possible, eat good foods and not processed and fast foods, avoid sugar and chemical sweeteners, and don’t get sunburned. This may exacerbate issue.

Lysine

Lysine is an essential amino acid, meaning that we must get it through food or supplements because the body can’t make it on its own. It’s used to make protein, which we need to produce infection-fighting antibodies, enzymes, hormones, and body tissues. Lysine has been found to inhibit the spread of the herpes simplex virus.

Although we get lysine through food sources such as red meat, milk, eggs, cheese, wheat germ, brewers yeast, and fish, what appears to be most important is the ratio of lysine to another amino acid, arginine. They compete with each other for absorption in the intestines, so the less arginine there is in the diet, the more lysine is absorbed. Foods that are rich in arginine include chocolate, peanuts, and almonds.

In addition to these temporary dietary changes:

Lysine supplements

  • Lysine supplements (e.g. 1,000 mg taken three times a day) may help to shorten the duration of cold sores.
  • Lysine ointment – a pilot study by the Southern California University looked at the effectiveness of a lysine-containing ointment in 30 people. Researchers found that the ointment produced full resolution in 40% of participants by the third day and in 87 percent by the end of the sixth day. No adverse effects were reported.

Reishi and Astragalus

Reishi, also called Ganoderma lucidum is a type of mushroom that has a long history of use in traditional Asian medicine to strengthen the immune system.

Preliminary evidence shows that reishi may inhibit the spread of the herpes virus. A typical dose is 600 milligrams once or twice a day.

Reishi is available in powder or supplement form. Reishi can delay blood clotting, so consult your doctor before taking reishi if you are taking aspirin, warfarin (coumadin), or any other medications or supplements that interfere with clotting.

In traditional Chinese medicine, reishi is often used in conjunction with a herb called astragalus. Astragalus has been found to improve immune function in people with herpes simplex keratitis.

Resveratrol

Resveratrol, a compound found naturally in red grapes, has been shown to be active against the herpes simplex virus in laboratory studies.

A study by the Northeastern Ohio University demonstrated that resveratrol cream applied topically two, three, or five times a day effectively suppressed cold sore development if it was applied one or 6 hours after infection with the herpes virus.

Resveratrol cream was also found to be as effective as 5% acyclovir ointment (Zovirax). Resveratrol cream also effectively suppressed cold sore formation in animals with herpes simplex infection that was resistant to acyclovir. No side effects were reported.

Propolis

Propolis, also called bee propolis, is a brownish, resinous substance. Bees collect it from poplar and conifer buds and use it “cement” their hives and keep them germ-free. It is sold in health food stores.

A study found that propolis was active against herpes simplex 1 virus. It is believed to work by preventing the virus from entering body cells and by blocking the replication and spread of the virus. For more information about propolis, read the Propolis Fact Sheet.

Self-Heal

The herb self-heal, also known as Prunella vulgaris is a perennial plant commonly found in China and Europe.

Extracts of this herb have been found to be effective against both herpes simplex 1 and 2 viruses. It is also believed to work against acyclovir-resistant strains of the herpes virus.

Other Remedies

  • Echinacea – A study by the University of Ottawa found that echinacea is active against herpes simplex type 1.
  • Black currant – An extract of black currant, also known as Ribes nigrum or Kurokarin in Japan, was found to fight the herpes virus in laboratory studies.
  • Rhubarb and sage cream – A German study examined rhubarb-sage cream compared to sage cream and Zovirax in 149 people with oral herpes cold sores. The combined topical sage-rhubarb preparation proved to be as effective as topical aciclovir cream and tended to be more active than the sage cream.
