Greetings, with urgency:
of 2010, but which is really an unfair bill targeted at our nation’s small
I do not want to repeat everything in the petition in this message. I will say
this. Last year, the federal government put thousands of small American
toy manufacturers out of business with a perhaps well meaning law that
forced toy companies to conduct rigorous testing for components like lead.
Sounds good, since no one wants lead in their toys. However, the tiny
companies that were making toys without any of the kinds of ingredients
the government was concerned about were put out of business because they
didn’t have the resources to conduct the necessary testing.
This is not fair.
Last year, it was toys.
This year, it’s cosmetics.
What will it be next year?
I don’t know, but I do know this. If the nation’s tiniest small business owners who
are making a living with their businesses — that is, their business is their job for
all practical purposes — don’t ban together with one voice to stop this law and
others like it, we will all be relegated to imported products.
Do you want that? I hope not. If you want to continue to live in a nation where you can
start a business and care for your family, even while the economy rocks and job
losses continue, then signing this petition is one step you can today to preserve that
