Natural DIY Winter Skin Anti-Aging Facial Cream

rose essential oilIt’s amazing what winter’s cold dry air can do to your skin. During this time of year it’s always a good idea to use a heavier skin treatment than you would during the summer months.

Here’s a great little DIY recipe that is not only beautifully scented and all natural, but really great for winter skin.  I use this cream/serum type mixture all over my face as well as an eye makeup remover….it’s fabulous!

Winter Anti-Aging Rose Facial Cream:

  • 1/2 oz + Rosewater or Rose Hydrosol
  • 1 oz. witchhazel
  • 3/4 oz. glycerin
  • 3 TBL orange blossom honey
  • 3 TBL Rosehip seed oil (and/or argan or wheatgerm oil)
  • 1/4 oz. Vit. E
  • 3-10 drops of anti-aging essential oils (I use rose, neroli, jasmine, ylang ylang, frankincense, sandalwood, myrrh, patchouli, and geranium)

Combine everything in a glass bowl and gently mix w/ whisk until thouroughly combined. Store in airtight glass jar at  room temp.. (around 67 degrees). This will last you through the winter in most cases. You can use only one of the essential oils listed, or a combination of these, or any mixture thereof. I tweak this recipe everytime I use it and sometimes use more or less of these ingredients, so whatever consistency you like feel free to ammend this however you choose. Happy blending! :)

Aromatherapy Remedy Reference; Physical, Emotional & Mental Symptoms List

Essential oils were used in ancient Egypt, Sumeria and in earlier times. In this truly holistic therapy the mind and body are inseparable. Plato is to have said that the source of most illness has its roots in the soul. There may be no better way to influence the mind and spirit, than through a physical medium that includes nature’s essences; essential oils provide this.

Scent has a special impact on living organisms. Scientific research into the human sense of smell finds it to be10,000 times more powerful than taste. Scent travels rapidly to the brain, and is shown to have a direct effect on the limbic system. The limbic system communicates with the autonomic nervous system. This is the known connection in the brain to the hypothalamus, emotion, memory, and some visceral (gut) reactions. Since the 1980′s olfactory research has promoted the psychological benefit of essential oils used in aromatherapy.

“The profound and complete therapeutic effects of essential oils derive from more than their pleasant fragrance. They have vital electromagnetic properties and vibrational energies that invigorate the mind, the soul, the body’s energy, and thus their functioning.” Kurt Schnaubelt, Ph.D.

The most common treatment applications using pure essential oils are inhalation and application through the skin.

Certain essential oils, for example, offer different psychological effects:

Anti-depressant Citrus, ylang ylang, geranium, jasmine, orange, sandalwood, lemon, lemon verbena, mandarin, and many more
Anxiety petigrain, neroli, bergamot, cypress, lavender, lime, marjoram, rose, violet leaf and others
Innervating basil, peppermint, rosemary (rosemary shows a positive effect in Alzheimer’s) as well as other essential oils
Sedative neroli, petigrain, cedarwood, chamomile, melissa, valerian, just to name a few

Studies dating from the 1920s report the following benefits of selected essential oils:

Lavender relaxing, circulation, meditative along with hundreds of other attributes
Pine Strengthening, stabilizing and much more
Angelica anorexia, relieving hopelessness, just to name two
Basil fatigue, general nerve tonic, anti-depressant, soporific, confusion, melancholy, mental clarity and concentration, reduces anxiety. (careful use prevents over-stimulation), along with many other things
Bay anti-hysteric, sedative, hypotensive, and more
Bergamot sedative for anxiety and antidepressant, stimulates appetite, and alot more
Chamomile(Roman) calming, hyperactivity, good for use with children, as well as a list of other attributes
Clary Sage sedative and nervine for insomnia, paranoia, panic, and hysteria, along with pms, and much more
Cypress anxiety, confusion, cellulite, and many more properties
Everlasting/Helichrysum
grounding increases dream activity, heals quickly, this oils has tons of properties for healing and more
Juniper apathy, paranoia, confusion, anxiety, nervous trembling and paralysis, diuretic, allergies, etc.
Marjoram grief, insomnia, alert, and much more
Spikenard grounding, meditative and so much more

To be truly effective, essential oils must be absolutely pure. Synthetic or adulterated oils, although less expensive, will not give you the effects you desire and may even have adverse effects. To in sure quality, you may want to choose only oils that are guaranteed to be organic or ethically wild crafted, properly distilled or extracted, originating from a reliable source and priced accordingly. It is essential that the oils are species specific.

Caution: certain essential oils are not recommend for use during pregnancy, and may be skin irritants if not properly administered.

Usage:

Baths 8 -10 drops.
Massage 10-20 drops in 1 ounce of oil.
Inhalation 2-5 drops on a tissue or cotton ball.
Diffusers use pure oils only.
Body lotion 15-20 drops in 1 ounce of lotion.
Spritzer 4 ounces of distilled water with 40-60 drops of pure essential oil, shake before using
Note: glass or PET bottles are essential oil safe.

Two blends that have worked well are as follows:

Nervous Tension
This blend will relax the nervous system, ease tension, and bring emotional equilibrium.
· 10 drops Lavender
· 10 drops Petitgrain
· 4 drops Roman Chamomile
Nervousness/Anxiety/Insomnia
This blend will profoundly relax the individual, induce sleep, and bring calm to an active mind that is preventing the correct emotional balance and total relaxation.
· 10 drops Lavender
· 10 drops Basil
· 3 drops Neroli

The precious oils of plants enable us to use the art of aromatherapy to enhance well being and open a new door to healing the spirit.

Aromatherapy as an Aphrodisiac- Essential Oil Recipes for Love

essential oils for love

Aromatherapy has, over the centuries, been used for countless purposes, including aiding the mind, body and spirit to heal, as well as having calming effects, and even help with beauty. But for many ancient cultures almost every one has well documented effects of flowers and their distilled oils on the human libido, and aphrodisiac aromatherapy is part of their makeup.

From the ancient Egyptians, Romans, Aztecs and Sumerians come the passed down romantic helpers of jasmine, peppermint, lilies, sunflowers, and of course, roses. Logan Pearsall Smith pointed out in the late 1800s that flowers are the sex organ of the plant and flowers are actually the sexual representation of the plant. Hmmmm, no sexual innuendos there.

Using Essential Oils for Balancing Chakras; 5th Chakra or the Throat Chakra

The Fifth Chakra (Vishudha) or Throat Chakra;
The fifth chakra is also known as the throat chakra or in Sanskrit- Vishudha (which means ‘pure’) and relates to communication and divine will, creativity, self-expression and the search for truth. It is where we speak our truths and take responsibility for our words.
The corresponding body parts associated with the throat chakra are the throat and neck, esophagus, mouth, teeth, upper lungs and respiratory system, ears, thyroid and parathyroid glands. The throat chakra also corresponds with the element of ether.
The corresponding colors associated with the throat chakra are blue, and sky blue. Blue symbolizes inspiration, devotion, infinity and religious goals, and the color blue also produces a calm and peaceful feeling.
The throat chakra enables us to communicate our thoughts and feelings, and is directly connected to the ability to express inner creativity. Both our teaching and learning are affected by the balance of the throat chakra. A strong throat chakra encourages leadership, the spirit of truth and listening to one’s intuition.

essential oil recipes for new beginnings

Here we are at the beginning of a new year. I love new beginnings. It’s like a fresh start; a way to press the re-start button on a whole new life. We have the chance to put those things behind us that no longer work for us, or are unhealthy, or cause us negativity in our lives. Whoo hoo!

Out with the old, in with the new. I am ready.

So, with that in mind, I’ve put together a few essential oil recipes for new beginnings in our lives. A fresh start if you will.

Essential oil recipe for new beginnings:

The first essential oil recipe for new beginnings has to do with an over-all fresh blend to give us that ‘breath of fresh air’ so to speak, clearing out the old negative stuff and inhaling a clean, new start. I started with citrus oils of course, as they are so great for an uplifting, and happy feeling. Then added a bit of lavender for a super clean and lovely balance. Next  is spearmint for a minty freshness and followed up with juniper, Atlas cedarwood and cypress.

Try this blend for your new year-

  • 7 drops grapefruit
  • 4 drops lemon
  • 4 drops tangerine
  • 4 drops lavender
  • 2 drops spearmint or peppermint
  • 3 drops juniper
  • 4 drops Atlas cedarwood
  • 3 drops cypress

This blend can be added to many different things depending on how you want to use it.

For a body re-fresher or spritzer add 20 drops of this blend to 4 ounces of water with a splash of vodka, shake and use anytime.

For a anointing oil or perfume type, use 12 drops of this blend mixed with 1 ounce of sweet almond oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, grapeseed oil or similar.

For a bath salt or body salt scrub, add 20 drops of the blend to 4 ounces of dead sea salts and 1-2 oz. of jojoba, sweet almond, olive, grapeseed or similar oil, mix and use as an exfoliating body scrub or soaking bath salts.

For a take-with-you-to-go style inhaler for freshness on the go, put about 25 drops or so of this blend in a small dark glass bottle, or you can make your own aromatherapy inhaler. You can find inhalers for pretty inexpensive all over the internet. Here’s a few places:

Aromatherapy Inhaler – Plastic, Pack of 4 (w/caps & wicks)-These plastic inhalers are convenient and portable. Place a few drops of your favorite Essential Oil or Aromatherapy Blend on the wick, slip it into the base and cover. To use, simply remove the top and inhale.
