Aromatherapy Remedy Reference; Physical, Emotional & Mental Symptoms List

Essential oils were used in ancient Egypt, Sumeria and in earlier times. In this truly holistic therapy the mind and body are inseparable. Plato is to have said that the source of most illness has its roots in the soul. There may be no better way to influence the mind and spirit, than through a physical medium that includes nature’s essences; essential oils provide this.

Scent has a special impact on living organisms. Scientific research into the human sense of smell finds it to be10,000 times more powerful than taste. Scent travels rapidly to the brain, and is shown to have a direct effect on the limbic system. The limbic system communicates with the autonomic nervous system. This is the known connection in the brain to the hypothalamus, emotion, memory, and some visceral (gut) reactions. Since the 1980′s olfactory research has promoted the psychological benefit of essential oils used in aromatherapy.

“The profound and complete therapeutic effects of essential oils derive from more than their pleasant fragrance. They have vital electromagnetic properties and vibrational energies that invigorate the mind, the soul, the body’s energy, and thus their functioning.” Kurt Schnaubelt, Ph.D.

The most common treatment applications using pure essential oils are inhalation and application through the skin.

Certain essential oils, for example, offer different psychological effects:

Anti-depressant Citrus, ylang ylang, geranium, jasmine, orange, sandalwood, lemon, lemon verbena, mandarin, and many more
Anxiety petigrain, neroli, bergamot, cypress, lavender, lime, marjoram, rose, violet leaf and others
Innervating basil, peppermint, rosemary (rosemary shows a positive effect in Alzheimer’s) as well as other essential oils
Sedative neroli, petigrain, cedarwood, chamomile, melissa, valerian, just to name a few

Studies dating from the 1920s report the following benefits of selected essential oils:

Lavender relaxing, circulation, meditative along with hundreds of other attributes
Pine Strengthening, stabilizing and much more
Angelica anorexia, relieving hopelessness, just to name two
Basil fatigue, general nerve tonic, anti-depressant, soporific, confusion, melancholy, mental clarity and concentration, reduces anxiety. (careful use prevents over-stimulation), along with many other things

Chamomile(Roman) calming, hyperactivity, good for use with children, as well as a list of other attributes

Cypress anxiety, confusion, cellulite, and many more properties

Juniper apathy, paranoia, confusion, anxiety, nervous trembling and paralysis, diuretic, allergies, etc.
Marjoram grief, insomnia, alert, and much more
Spikenard grounding, meditative and so much more

To be truly effective, essential oils must be absolutely pure. Synthetic or adulterated oils, although less expensive, will not give you the effects you desire and may even have adverse effects. To in sure quality, you may want to choose only oils that are guaranteed to be organic or ethically wild crafted, properly distilled or extracted, originating from a reliable source and priced accordingly. It is essential that the oils are species specific.

Caution: certain essential oils are not recommend for use during pregnancy, and may be skin irritants if not properly administered.

Usage:

Baths 8 -10 drops.
Massage 10-20 drops in 1 ounce of oil.
Inhalation 2-5 drops on a tissue or cotton ball.
Diffusers use pure oils only.
Body lotion 15-20 drops in 1 ounce of lotion.
Spritzer 4 ounces of distilled water with 40-60 drops of pure essential oil, shake before using
Note: glass or PET bottles are essential oil safe.

Two blends that have worked well are as follows:

Nervous Tension
This blend will relax the nervous system, ease tension, and bring emotional equilibrium.
· 10 drops Lavender
· 10 drops Petitgrain
· 4 drops Roman Chamomile
Nervousness/Anxiety/Insomnia
This blend will profoundly relax the individual, induce sleep, and bring calm to an active mind that is preventing the correct emotional balance and total relaxation.

The precious oils of plants enable us to use the art of aromatherapy to enhance well being and open a new door to healing the spirit.

Fighting Allergies; Immune Boosting Essential Oils, Allergen Home Spray Recipe, and Allergy Relief Blend

Allergies; img. courtesy of Getty images

Living with allergies is no fun, and can be completely miserable for those who suffer with them. Even the simple act of getting out of bed may be too much for those who have a terrible case of allergies.

And with all the over-the-counter medicines, you never really know what you are putting into your body. Some of the chemicals used may be just as bad as the allergies they are suffering with, and may even worsen some of the symptoms, and almost as bad, mask the problems so they are never really rid of the root causes completely. I think this is just another reason people are turning to natural remedies.

An Allergy is a hypersensitivity disorder of the immune system, or an exaggerated immune response or reaction to substances that are generally not harmful.

So, building up your immune system is the best way to deal with allergies. And essential oils are a great way to do just that. Essential oils can also help those who suffer from allergies get some relief, and for some, even help rid them of the allergy entirely. Finding the root cause of the allergy is your biggest asset and will eventually help lead you to dealing with the problem once and for all.

Here are a list of great essential oils that are wonderful for boosting the immune system;

Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, Rosemary, Oregano, Lemon, Cinnamon, Frankincense, Vetiver, Thyme, Savory, Niaouli, Ravensara, Peppermint, Clove, Palmarosa, Coriander, Bergamot, Geranium, and Bay Laurel.

Immune-Boost Blend

I made a wonderful Immune Boost Blend that packs a powerful punch, and really does what it says…boosts  the immune system and gives your body great tools for the fight.

Also, Read this post I wrote about allergies, you may find some good tips in there to help, See it here.

Allergen Home Spray Recipe

To make this spray, I went to a trusted company whom everyone seems to buy their products in the local grocery and found the following:

I looked up the ingredients in the most popular home allergen spray-

Clorox® Anywhere® Anti-Allergen Fabric Spray – Product Details

Ingredients include: (Water, Sodium Carbonate, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Hypochlorite).

which is basically, washing soda, salt, and bleach diluted heavily with water!

It would be simple to make your own large bottle of this home allergen spray, which would save you scads of money.

Here’s how you would make your own—In a 16 oz spray bottle (from the dollar store) you would use mostly purified water (bottle filled almost to the top with hot purified water to dissolve the rest of the ingredients) add  a little washing soda (about a TBL.) and salt (about a TBL), and a tiny bit of bleach (about a tsp.), shake well and walla! Homemade allergen spray!

Though, this does not include any essential oils for extra benefits. Which would be where you’d just add about 1/8 oz, or about a dram of E.O.s to it and shake it up! That’s it!

Allergy Relief Blend by Yellowstar Essentials

Yellowstar Essentials Allergy Relief Blend includes essential oils of;

German Chamomile, Roman Chamomile, High Altitude Lavender, Blue Tansy, Melissa-Lemon Balm, Ravensara, Juniper berry, Lemon Blossom, Cajeput, Spikenard, Frankincense, Rosemary, Lemongrass, Pine-Long Leaf, Pine Scotch, Spruce, Vetiver, and Wild Black Spruce.

To make your own allergy relief blend, gather essential oils listed above and a pipette for each (unless they have orifice reducers), and a one ounce dark glass sterilized bottle. This blend may be added to a diffuser, a spray, an inhaler, or even a few drops on a handkerchief carried around with you. If you want to add this to the allergen home spray recipe, for a 16 oz bottle (as recipes lists above) use no more than ¼ oz (7.5 ml), and ideally ⅛ oz (a dram, or 3.75 ml).

  • German Chamomile- 5 drops
  • Roman Chamomile- 15 drops
  • High Altitude Lavender, -60 drops
  • Blue Tansy- 25 drops
  • Melissa-Lemon Balm, – 20 drops
  • Lemon Blossom -20 drops
  • Ravensara – 30 drops
  • Juniper berry – 20 drops
  • Cajeput – 20 drops
  • Spikenard – 10 drops
  • Frankincense – 35 drops
  • Rosemary, – 15 drops
  • Lemongrass, – 20 drops
  • Pine-Long Leaf, – 20 drops
  • Pine Scotch, – 20 drops
  • Spruce – 30 drops
  • Wild Black Spruce- 12 drops
  • Vetiver – 25 drops

The one I sell is an 8 oz bottle of the pre-made spray with the E.O. blend and could be used as is, or could be diluted further into a 16 oz bottle to extend it. Or see other options below:

Note that the E.O. blends are pure with no dilutants added and are very concentrated, you only need a few drops at a time. Also note–to give you an idea of how potent these are, it takes over one TON of rose petals to make one ounce of rose oil. (that’s really concentrated!!!). This is why pure therapeutic grade essential oils are so expensive.

Yellowstar Essential Prices for pure E.O. blend of Allergy Relief Blend:

  • 1/8 oz/ dram size Allergy Relief Blend- pure therapeutic grade oils, no dilutants-$10
  • 1/2 oz (15ml) Allergy Relief Blend – pure therapeutic grade oils, no dilutants- $32
  • 1 oz (30ml) Allergy Relief Blend – pure therapeutic grade oils, no dilutants – $49
  • 8 oz (240ml) Allergy Relief Spray – $12

If you are interested in ordering these, just send me an email to :

with “Allergy Relief” in the subject line, and which one you’d like, and I’ll make it fresh-to-order for you.

Also note that I only accept Paypal at this time, and only ship U.S. (I will send outside of U.S., but note that shipping costs are very expensive!–example; international shipping costs for very small flat rate box is; $13.95, medium flat rate box is $45.50, and large flat rate box is $58.50.)

How to Use Essential Oils for Detoxification

essential oils for well being

Using essential oils for detoxification is only one way that these magical drops can aid us in our goals of being healthy in mind, body and spirit. Essential oils are truly nature’s gift to us with all they offer in supporting our health and well-being.

Many of us are turning to alternative medicines, and therapies looking for natural ways to detoxify our bodies inside and out, as we are all subject to so many toxins daily, that over time these poisons can build up in our fragile (but miraculous) systems, and cause major health issues. Detoxifying the body using essential oils is one of the best ways to clean out the harmful toxins laying stagnant in our bodies.

essential oil recipe for cold sores

COLD SORES
These nasty little – painful lesions – are caused by the herpes simplex virus and are contagious. There may be pain or tingling one to two days before the cold sores appear. Cold sores generally clear in seven to ten days. They’re sometimes confused with canker sores, which are not contagious but produce small, painful ulcers in the soft tissues of the mouth, such as the tongue and the walls of the mouth.

Many essential oils can help with viral infections but need to be in your system soon after you are exposed.   Those that suffer from cold sores know there can be many things that ‘trigger’ an outbreak.  Stress,  whether it be from emotional or physical – being run down so a cold or flu can take hold can easily bring on a cold sore.
Prevention is best done by controlling your exposure to stress and of course others with colds and flus.  But once your ‘cold sore’ has attacked, you may get relief by applying a drop of Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) has antiviral properties. In a research study conducted in hospitals and dermatology clinics in Germany, lemon balm cream promoted the healing of blisters in five days compared to 10 days in the control group. Used on regularly, lemon balm cream may decrease the frequency of recurrences.

Also Tea tree (one drop neat) on the blisters several times throughout the day.  Tea Tree can be applied ‘neatly’ which means undiluted.  Lavender may also be applied neatly.  Roman chamomile, Eucalyptus, Bergamot, Peppermint and Geranium may also stop the blistering in it’s tracks.  To apply these other oils first mix them with a small amount of vodka. The best ratio is up to 6 drops in 5 ml of vodka.   Mix well and dab on the blister using a cotton-tip applicator.

A study by the University of Heidelberg found that peppermint essential oil was found to penetrate the skin and have a direct virucidal effect againt the herpes simplex virus. Peppermint oil was also found to be active against an acyclovir-resistant strain of the herpes simpex virus. Although it’s promising, peppermint oil shouldn’t be used until studies have established its safety. Peppermint oil is absorbed through the skin so even small amounts could be toxic. Peppermint oil should never be ingested unless it is therapeutic grade.

Remember everyone’s immune system is different and with Aromatherapy we can try different essential oils – what works for one person may not work for the next.  Usually you can find one that works best for you.  Keep a journal of what you try at each outbreak.  Recording things like how much, how applied and what oil(s) were used.  Soon you will know what works best for you!
If the blisters open up, mixing any of the above essential oils with a small amount of Sweet Almond oil will help to keep the skin moist and less likely to crack.  All essential oils have healing properties and will help your body to heal itself.

So, here’s the essential oil recipe for cold sores:

  • 3 drops lemon balm (melissa)
  • 2 drops tea tree
  • 3 drops lavender
  • 3 drops eucalyptus
  • 3-4 drops geranium
  • 3 drops Roman chamomile
  • 3 drops bergamot

Add to 1 oz of sweet almond oil if you have dried and cracked cold sores,

or 2 oz. vodka for wet/ type cold sores to dry them out and heal them. Shake before each use.

here are other natural remedies and natural cures for cold sores:

Lysine

Lysine is an essential amino acid, meaning that we must get it through food or supplements because the body can’t make it on its own. It’s used to make protein, which we need to produce infection-fighting antibodies, enzymes, hormones, and body tissues. Lysine has been found to inhibit the spread of the herpes simplex virus.

Although we get lysine through food sources such as red meat, milk, eggs, cheese, wheat germ, brewers yeast, and fish, what appears to be most important is the ratio of lysine to another amino acid, arginine. They compete with each other for absorption in the intestines, so the less arginine there is in the diet, the more lysine is absorbed. Foods that are rich in arginine include chocolate, peanuts, and almonds.

In addition to these temporary dietary changes:

Lysine supplements

  • Lysine supplements (e.g. 1,000 mg taken three times a day) may help to shorten the duration of cold sores.
  • Lysine ointment – a pilot study by the Southern California University looked at the effectiveness of a lysine-containing ointment in 30 people. Researchers found that the ointment produced full resolution in 40% of participants by the third day and in 87 percent by the end of the sixth day. No adverse effects were reported.

Reishi and Astragalus

Reishi, also called Ganoderma lucidum is a type of mushroom that has a long history of use in traditional Asian medicine to strengthen the immune system.

Preliminary evidence shows that reishi may inhibit the spread of the herpes virus. A typical dose is 600 milligrams once or twice a day.

Reishi is available in powder or supplement form. Reishi can delay blood clotting, so consult your doctor before taking reishi if you are taking aspirin, warfarin (coumadin), or any other medications or supplements that interfere with clotting.

In traditional Chinese medicine, reishi is often used in conjunction with a herb called astragalus. Astragalus has been found to improve immune function in people with herpes simplex keratitis.

Resveratrol

Resveratrol, a compound found naturally in red grapes, has been shown to be active against the herpes simplex virus in laboratory studies.

A study by the Northeastern Ohio University demonstrated that resveratrol cream applied topically two, three, or five times a day effectively suppressed cold sore development if it was applied one or 6 hours after infection with the herpes virus.

Resveratrol cream was also found to be as effective as 5% acyclovir ointment (Zovirax). Resveratrol cream also effectively suppressed cold sore formation in animals with herpes simplex infection that was resistant to acyclovir. No side effects were reported.

Propolis

Propolis, also called bee propolis, is a brownish, resinous substance. Bees collect it from poplar and conifer buds and use it “cement” their hives and keep them germ-free. It is sold in health food stores.

A study found that propolis was active against herpes simplex 1 virus. It is believed to work by preventing the virus from entering body cells and by blocking the replication and spread of the virus. For more information about propolis, read the Propolis Fact Sheet.

Self-Heal

The herb self-heal, also known as Prunella vulgaris is a perennial plant commonly found in China and Europe.

Extracts of this herb have been found to be effective against both herpes simplex 1 and 2 viruses. It is also believed to work against acyclovir-resistant strains of the herpes virus.

Other Remedies

  • Echinacea – A study by the University of Ottawa found that echinacea is active against herpes simplex type 1.
  • Black currant – An extract of black currant, also known as Ribes nigrum or Kurokarin in Japan, was found to fight the herpes virus in laboratory studies.
  • Rhubarb and sage cream – A German study examined rhubarb-sage cream compared to sage cream and Zovirax in 149 people with oral herpes cold sores. The combined topical sage-rhubarb preparation proved to be as effective as topical aciclovir cream and tended to be more active than the sage cream.
  • Undaria pinnatifida – known as wakame in Japan, undaria is a type of seaweed that has been found to improve the healing time and reactivation of herpes infections.

Safety Precautions

People with tuberculosis, leukemia, diabetes, connective tissue disorders, multiple sclerosis, HIV or AIDS, any autoimmune diseases, organ transplant, or possibly, liver disorders should not take herbs or supplements that improve immune function (such as reishi and astragalus) without consulting their doctor first. Taking immune-boosting supplements may reduce the effectiveness of medications that suppress the immune system.

Get Rid of Acne Naturally With Essential Oils

Best Essential Oils for Acne Treatment thanks to; http://www.naturalnews.com/028374_acne_essential_oils.html

Individual skin types will react differently to essential oils. The process of combining and experimenting with the best essential oil blend may be a trial and error process. Generally, the skin responds well to aromatherapy oils because they heal and nourish the cells and reduce inflammation. Essential oils also have antibacterial and antiseptic properties.

The best essential oils for acne control include lavender, geranium, sandalwood, jasmine, lemon, patchouli, chamomile, rosewood and eucalyptus.

Essential Oil Recipe for Acne

Create a natural gel to treat acne. Combine a quarter of a cup of aloe vera gel with ten to twelve drops of geranium oil, ten drops of lavender oil and seven drops lemon grass oil or tea tree oil. Blend all the oils and gel together thoroughly and apply to blemish areas twice daily after cleaning the skin. Do not use around the eyes.

Safety Precautions

Unlike perfume, essential oils are highly concentrated substances that need to be diluted prior to application to the skin. When buying essential oils, it is important to look at the label closely to see if they are pre-diluted or not. Buy undiluted, pure, organic essential oil and avoid cheap oils as they may be impure, adulterated or distilled with petrochemical solvents which may aggravate the skin instead of healing it.

Good carrier oils for the skin include sweet almond, apricot kernel, carrot oil and avocado, jojoba and hazelnut. To dilute, add ten drops of essential oil to 28 grams (1 ounce) of carrier oil.

Make sure the skin is thoroughly clean and dry before applying oils.

Consult a qualified homeopath if the skin is severely inflamed or not improving after using home remedies.

Additional Tips to Combat Acne

Cut out sugar, processed and refined foods from the diet. Sugar is not food and should not be eaten in its refined form. Eliminating sugar is possibly the best thing an acne sufferer can do to cure his or her acne problem. Cravings should disappear after one week or so of eliminating sugar from the diet.

Health Care Provider seeking Swine Flu (H1N1) guidance

Thought I would post (with permission, of course) an email exchange from earlier this week. (The title of this post is the subject line of the Email.)

Marge,So sorry to bother you again.
My husband and I are both health care providers, and both actually on the “front line” in emergency medicine. We also both work in emergency management. As such, we are both considered in the “high risk” group for both seasonal flu and H1N1. We also have 3 children, ages 17, 12 and 2 who will be considered in the “high risk” group for H1N1.

Because the peak for H1N1 is predicted for October, and the vaccine will be available in limited quantities in mid to late October, I am sincerely concerned about protecting my family.

I’ve attempted research in this area and have come across many essential oils for the prevention of H1N1 – Ravensara, Ravintsara, Cinnamon, Lavendar, Clove, etc., but am not sure the best way to use them to protect my family (diffuser, massage, inhaler,etc.). I have read that rubbing Ravensara on the soles of the feet every morning and evening will afford some protection, but am concerned about using it on the 2 year old and using it long term. I am also not sure of the safest oils to use to protect my 2 year old.

I have purchased Ravensara, Ravintsara, Thyme Linalol, Eucalyptus smithii, and the Flu Foil and Germ Beater blends, but any guidance you could give in their use, use of any additional oils or therapy, and duration of use would be greatly appreciated.

-”Because I suspect others might be pondering the use of Essential Oils to protect themselves and their families against the promised H1N1 epidemic, I thought sharing my comments in public might be appropriate.
……
First… as a health care provider, I’m sure you know that I can neither give advice, nor even suggest that the essential oils we make available could have any possible therapeutic benefits. To do so would leave me open to the FDA charging me with selling “unregistered drugs”…

having said that.

For the two year old I would definitely use the ravINTsara, not ravensara.. What I would do for your whole family (I’ve seen case studies where this was used in schools and the absenteeism rate plummeted)… I’d blend ravintsara into aloe vera gel…as high as a 10% dilution… 5% for the 2 year old, and use that as “hand cream” three times a day.

For the whole family… I would diffuse Flu Foil… or even use inhalers on a regular basis (ie, every hour or so, for you and your hubbie…or between patients.) I’d reserve the Euc Smithii for ‘cold symptoms’… it’s the best decongestant for the little one…and effective for all of you… best by diffusion, or a drop on the pillow case.

I’d use the Germbeater as a room spray, or occasionally diffuse it… keeping in mind that it is truly aimed at bacteria, rather than viruses..virii?? specifically.”

Ravintsara, Ravensara, Palma Rosa, Eucalyptus and Lavender are the oils used in Nature’s Gift FLU FOIL, but you could very well make your own blend by purchasing the separate oils.

And as for the Germbeater blend that includes the following essential oils:

Lemon Myrtle, touched with Tea Tree and Lemon scented Tea Tree, Ravensara for its antiviral potential, Cedarwood, Pine, Lemon Eucalyptus for molds and spores, and the powerfully germ killing Cinnamon Bark. This is not a blend to use on the skin, it will burn, and contains a known sensitizer. It is designed for the diffuser, or to be diluted into a room and countertop spray.

-cont.

“The thyme linalol would be a gentle and safe antibacterial for the little one, as well as the whole family. I suspect that, had you not already purchased it, you might find Thyme Thujanol a bit more effective, but you have the linalol on hand, so I would go with that.

I’d look at alternating the ravensara and ravintsara for the older members of the family…either by diffusion, or, as mentioned, in the Aloe gel… it is my personal belief that it would be a more effective anti viral than the antibacterial soaps you probably use in your practices.

I’d think about diffusing flu foil and germ beater alternately…

and I’d look at using one oil or blend for 3 or 4 days, then alternate with another… ie, perhaps ravensara for 3 days, then flu foil, then back again. I think switching off is better than always using the same oils.

hope some of this helps… you and yours are most definitely on the front lines and more at risk than the general population. GOOD LUCK… and I hope to hear come winter that you all made it through ‘flu season’ unscathed!!!

as you can tell, I’m not much on the theory that the oils should be applied to the soles of the feet OH..and neither cinnamon nor cloves should be used topically. We have them both in our germbeater spice blend… but I’d not use them other than in a room spray or a blend for diffusion.

hope all of this helps.

I would LOVE to post your question and my rambling answer on our blog with your permission…”

This is such good advice. I am a second grade teacher and my principal will not let me use any oils in my classroom. I was hoping to be able to diffuse some blends. He is afraid someone will have a reaction and even if it’s not caused by an essential oil blend a parent might think it is and sue us. So, I can only use them on myself.
I am going to order the Ravintsara Oil. I didn’t realize it was better than the ravensara. Thanks again for your help!
